Auburn City Council will consider a 12-month moratorium on new data centers Thursday while officials study potential impacts on infrastructure, electricity, water, public safety and the environment. The local pause would go further than the council's earlier call for a statewide moratorium by preventing Auburn from accepting or processing data center applications during the yearlong review. Council will also consider seeking up to $962,500 in state funding toward a $2.75 million overhaul of geothermal heating and cooling systems at several municipal buildings.
Drier and more comfortable weather is returning to most of the Finger Lakes and Central New York Thursday, with only a few showers possible near the Southern Tier and highs generally in the 70s. Friday looks like the best weather day, with mostly dry conditions and highs in the mid-70s to lower 80s before rain chances begin increasing later Saturday. Showers and thunderstorms become more widespread Saturday night into Sunday, with additional lake-influenced showers possible into Monday.
One passenger died and six people were taken to hospitals Wednesday after a vehicle carrying six adults collided with a dump truck at Route 488 and Freshour Road in Hopewell. Three passengers were flown to Strong Memorial Hospital, two others were taken by ambulance to hospitals and the driver, George Payne, 75, of Phelps, was taken to F.F. Thompson Hospital. The intersection was closed for about five hours while investigators worked at the scene, and the crash remains under investigation.
Gov. Kathy Hochul has launched statewide listening sessions through the FutureWorks Commission as New York prepares for artificial intelligence to reshape jobs, particularly administrative, clerical and customer service work. The state is simultaneously investing heavily in AI, including $500 million for Empire AI, while the commission studies potential policies involving worker training, education, job transitions and economic security. Its recommendations are due by the end of 2026 and could help determine how New York protects workers while continuing to expand its AI economy.
Seneca County sheriff candidate Michael Passalacqua has selected longtime New York State Police veteran Steven M. Kelley to serve as undersheriff if he is elected. Kelley has 32 years with State Police, three years of corrections experience and more than five years as a town justice, while Passalacqua says his own background includes law enforcement administration, budgeting and personnel management. Passalacqua said their different backgrounds would give the pair experience across many of the responsibilities handled by the Sheriff's Office.
State Sen. Tom O'Mara and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano will hold a news conference Thursday in Corning about funding cuts they say will eliminate support for six child advocacy centers and reduce services across New York. The affected organizations include centers serving Steuben County and the Finger Lakes, while funding for the Chemung and Schuyler County center was also significantly reduced. The centers coordinate child abuse investigations and connect children and families with medical care, counseling, crisis intervention and other services.
A federal bill sponsored by Rep. Josh Riley that would restrict bonuses for executives at certain electric utilities has gained bipartisan support through a companion proposal in the Senate. The legislation would prohibit executive bonuses when customer rate increases exceed inflation and cap bonuses when increases remain at or below inflation, with violations resulting in bonus money being returned to customers. The proposal doesn’t yet have a committee timetable or date for further action.
University of Rochester Medicine doctors are warning about a growing online trend in which people take smaller or less frequent doses of GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Zepbound than prescribed. Doctors say there isn't enough research to know whether "microdosing" is safe or effective and are also concerned about compounded GLP-1 drugs, which aren't reviewed by the FDA for safety, effectiveness or quality before being dispensed. Rochester experts recommend patients use the medications under medical supervision rather than changing their dosing based on advice found online.
