Every major public health challenge has a day that brings people together.
Heart disease. Cancer. Mental health. Alzheimer’s disease.
Now it’s time for digital toxicity.
On Sunday, August 2, 2026, we will mark the First Annual Digital Toxicity Awareness Day—a new initiative dedicated to one simple idea:
Our brains deserve protection in the digital age.
As a physician and researcher, I have spent decades studying how chronic stress changes the brain and nervous system. Increasingly, I have become concerned that many of the same biological systems are being activated by something millions of us carry in our pockets every day: the smartphone.
This isn’t about blaming technology.
Technology has transformed our lives in remarkable ways. But constant notifications, endless scrolling, sleep disruption, and an economy built around capturing our attention come with biological costs we can no longer ignore.
Research has linked excessive or problematic smartphone and social media use with differences in brain structure and function, impaired attention, disrupted sleep, anxiety, and other adverse mental health outcomes. The conversation is shifting from whether digital overload affects us to how we respond to it. (digitaltoxicityawareness.com)
That is why we created Digital Toxicity Awareness Day.
On August 2 at 12:00 p.m. Central, I will host a free YouTube Live event where we’ll discuss the latest science on digital toxicity, answer your questions, and explore practical ways to build a healthier relationship with technology. There will also be an in-person event at Stella Mental Health in Westmont, Illinois. The initiative is designed to raise awareness that excessive digital exposure may have measurable biological effects on the brain and nervous system. (digitaltoxicityawareness.com)
This movement is about awareness—not fear.
It is about protecting sleep.
Protecting attention.
Protecting childhood.
Protecting human connection.
And ultimately, protecting the brain.
Whether you’re a parent, teacher, physician, student, or simply someone who feels your phone has begun to control more of your life than you’d like, I invite you to join us.
Visit DigitalToxicityAwareness.com to learn more, register for the free event, and help spread the word. Together, we can make August 2 the day the world begins taking digital toxicity as seriously as every other major public health challenge.
