One of my favorite all time radio talk hosts, Mark Levin, addressed this topic on his radio show on Wednesday. With all due respects to this legend known as “The Great One”, I have to kinda disagree with him on this topic.
You see folks, there has been a tremendous amount of opposition to people having data centers in their own back yard. The reason is quite obvious, data centers take up lots of electricity, water and various other utilities. Some people have expressed concerns about blackouts and brownouts resulting from this excessive use of electricity as well as possible utilty rate increases resulting from these data centers being built. A lot of us, especially the elderly and those on fixed income, just simply don’t have the financial means to absorb these rate increases right now.
If we are going to allow these data centers to be built, there needs to be safeguards put on them. I believe President Trump, who is on record as being for data centers, wants those buildings to take full responsibility for rate increases as well as accept liability for any harm that results from them being built. From Google:
“Yes, President Trump has pushed for policy requiring large technology and AI data centers (rather than building centers) to take financial responsibility for their massive utility needs. Through his administration's Ratepayer Protection Pledge, he aims to shield everyday consumers from surging electricity bills driven by these high-tech facilities.”
So, if you are building a data center, and even though you may have the President’s back, keep in mind he DOES NOT completely and totally have your back. Even he sees the problems associated with building data centers as a lot of us do. He is on record as saying you need to take responsibility for paying for your utilities rather than us, the other utility customers shouldering it for your excessive needs.
This is something you might want to think about when deciding to put your data center in people’s back yard. Maybe you might NOT want to do it.
