There is a step in developing a photograph in the darkroom that most people never think about. It’s called the fixer. After the image appears on your paper, it is not ‘safe’. The paper is still sensitive. Leave it in the light and it will keep reacting, keep darkening, until the whole picture disappears into black. The fixer is the bath that stops the reaction. It makes the image permanent. Without it, everything you just brought forward slowly erases itself.
The physics of it is simple. Development reveals. Fixing preserves. They are two different steps, and skipping the second negates the first.
The psychology of it is what I keep coming back to. We think revealing is enough. We had the experience. We felt the thing. We even saw the images once, glowing on a screen. But an unfixed image is still fading. A moment you do not preserve keeps reacting to time, keeps darkening, until one day you reach for it and it is gone.
In a DIVE IN session, the reveal is the easy part. The water does that. The harder part comes later, at home, when the images are still sitting in the light, unfixed, quietly disappearing.
Printing is the fixer. It is the step that says this one, this moment, stops here. It stops fading. It stops being at the mercy of a hard drive or a phone upgrade or the slow erosion of a folder you forget. A print is a fixed image. It will last.
I think about this in my own work all the time. How much of what matters to me have I revealed but never fixed. The idea I had once and never wrote down. The season I meant to mark and let pass. Revealing is a feeling. Fixing is a decision.
This is the season for fixing. The shooting is done. Now we choose what stops fading.
