A digital file feels permanent. It is not. It has a half-life, like anything else that decays.
We treat the cloud like a vault. Upload it and it is safe forever, we think. But storage is physical. Drives fail. Formats go obsolete. Files corrupt one silent bit at a time, a process engineers actually call bit rot. The photo you saved in 2016 is not guaranteed to open in 2036. Nothing digital is standing still. It is all quietly decaying, out of sight.
The physics is entropy. Everything trends toward disorder. A magnetic drive loses its charge. A file format is abandoned. The medium forgets.
The psychology is the false sense of safety. A gallery full of images feels like an accomplishment. Look at all we captured. But a gallery is not a vault. It is a holding tank, and the water is slowly draining. The comfort of it is all backed up is exactly the feeling that lets us wait, and waiting is the one thing digital does not survive.
I have watched it happen more times than I can count in thirteen years. A family loved their session, meant to print, felt no urgency because the files were safe. Then a phone was lost, or a drive died, or the images simply got buried under ten thousand newer photos. Safe turned out to mean forgotten.
Archival printing is the opposite bet. Museum grade paper and pigment are engineered to resist decay, to hold color for generations, not years. It is the one form of your photograph designed to outlive the technology it was made on.
I do not say this to frighten anyone. I say it because I believe what I make should last longer than the device it lives on. A file has a half-life. A well made print has a lifespan measured in lifetimes.
This is the season to move what matters out of the holding tank and into something built to last.
