The Latent Image : What Already Exists Before You Develop It

This series isn’t really about prints. It’s about becoming the kind of family that doesn’t let what already happened stay hidden.

In film photography, which is back en vogue, the picture exists the instant light hits the emulsion. You just can’t see it yet.

The latent image. It is fully formed the moment the shutter opens. Every detail already recorded, already true on the negative. What development does is not create the picture. It reveals what was always there, waiting in the dark.

The psychology is the same. The meaningful thing already happened. Your daughter really did float there, weightless, mid laugh. That moment is recorded. It exists. But a moment that stays latent, sitting in a folder you never open, is a picture no one ever developed. It is true and it is invisible at the same time.

I have spent thirteen years watching families make images they never bring to the surface. The session is extraordinary. Everyone is moved. And then the files go into a gallery, and the gallery becomes a tab, and the tab becomes a thing to get to later. The image is fully formed. It is just never developed.

Now begins the season of bringing the latent image to life There’s the choosing, the printing, the bringing forward of what already exists.

This is what beneath the surface has always meant. The picture is already there. You are not making it. You are revealing it.
