Things have been a bit hectic going back to work and trying to finish up a longer than intended project. I’m excited to get back on the Night Fox horse and get back to it. It’s such a blessing to be busy though. I’m really proud of the work that I’m doing and hopefully I’ll look back and still be proud.
And speaking of proud real quick: A board game I did some art for is going live on Kickstarter 10am (EST) May 12. By the time this comes out the campaign should be live.
So if you like pretending to be evil and creating a villainous lair, DREADQUARTERS is your game.
I’ve been toying with designs and color for Mareen Life. I’m gearing up to do some more pitch pages and the scene I’m thinking about doing is going to need a lot of attention and work. I’m also experimenting with limited color pallets but I don’t think that’s going to be the way for this project. It’s really more about finding color families and pulling from those.
The original pages had three families: blue, brown and yellow/green. I need to make sure I can fit some reds in there where I need them.
I definitely want to hire a colorist for this book.
I also found this beautiful, wobbly brush on the Clip Studio asset store. With a regular amount of pressure it gives a subtle and clean wobble to the lines (see far right image). I like a clean line because I’m a perfectionist so being able to add some “imperfections” without extra work on my part is a huge plus.

Are you familiar with LoopDeLoop? The monthly looping animation challenge? Put on by animation industry professionals? No? Okay. Well, that’s basically it. You create a looping animation based on a theme. This April’s theme was FRESH.
So I felt like a lot of people would do a sort of fruit theme for theirs. The freshness of fruit seemed like a good place to start. But I thought about something losing freshness. Then that’s when things were coming together.
My idea stemmed from the feeling of being at lunch at work, with very few options around for fresh food. So you pack a lunchable or frozen meal. You open it and it’s just nasty. The disappointment of a gross lunch when you don’t have options is just so familiar… unfortunately.
Now, I’m not an animator. I work in animation but I don’t do the actual animating. So I work within my own limitations. Basically the in between stuff is where I lack skill. I’m hoping to work on that in my future loops, but for now, this is what I’ve got.
I built this background in Procreate and imported it into Procreate Dreams. I wanted it to feel like a cafeteria or break room with those awful little round tables and a random carton of chocolate milk just sitting there. Probably from the last person to sit there. I like building on the textures because the animation itself won’t be that sophisticated. The only thing I might change is pulling the carton away from the side and putting it a bit more into the center or third line.

I’m really happy with this loop! I think it turned out well. I know where I can improve but the joke is okay and I like the funky colors that I chose to make it seem kind of surreal. It was also my first time using Procreate Dreams. It’s a really fun software and the improvements they’ve made are really good. At least for a pleb like me.
