April just flew by! We had a cyclone that wasn’t scary for Auckland but did hit other parts of the country a lot harder. It’s been getting colder so we’ve been snuggling up with our hot water bottles and new kitten!
I also returned to my storyboarding job and that’s been cool so far.
I’ve been working hard on Night Fox now that Fast Break is out of my hands. I’ve been doing my best to keep up a pretty consistent pace with inking the pages. Unfortunately I’ve built a terrible habit of not really pencilling my work fully before heading into inks. It adds way too much time to a step that should be faster. I keep forgetting that honestly.
It’s also hard because I feel like going from thumbnail or loose sketch to inks helps me keep the energy of the piece. There’s a balance to when a stage is done.
As of right now, I’m approximately 25% of the way done inking. It’s a 209 page book so you do the math. I’ve just gotta keep up the momentum and stamina.
I’ve been a part of the KCU community since about 2020 or so, when we were in the heat of the pandemic and it was much easier to engage with communities online. Pitchfest is something that the brilliant minds at KCU came up with to help get more editors and agents eyes on new, fresh projects.
A couple of my friends have even gotten their book deals as a result of this event! So although my project has been on submission for a while, I figured it doesn’t hurt to submit and see what happens.
I submitted a project I’ve been working on for a hot second called MAREEN LIFE, about a half mermaid, half human uncovering legends and figuring out where she belongs.
I got an Honorable Mention!
I’m completely blown away! My goal was to make top 50. I didn’t imagine I’d basically get 6th place! Huge thanks to Janna, Bailey, Jade and Lisa! Check out all the other projects and give em some love!

I actually don’t have anything else going on for a little bit. Which is great because I’ve gotta focus on finishing some projects and making progress on Night Fox. Now that I’m back at work it’s making it difficult to make progress, even little progress.
So I guess what’s coming up is me just drawing my little heart out. Maybe setting up a shop so my book are more readily available.
