Also at Hippos, archaeologists recently uncovered a lead sling bullet—a weapon that evokes the story of David and Goliath. Though the slingshot was a common-and lethal-weapon in the ancient world, this lead bullet dates to sometime in the Hellenistic period, around the same time as Rome's rise to
power. Archaeologists believe that it was fired at attackers advancing up an ancient road toward the city. What made this find stand out is its inscription: the Greek word, MAOOY. In a paper published in Palestine Exploration Quarterly, researchers suggest it could be translated as something similar to,
"Learn your lesson!" Nor is this the only example: other sling bullets have been found elsewhere with inscriptions like
"take a taste" and "take it!"
I think David would have had something like
“God is giant” or “The Battle is the Lord’s” on it. No matter how well you aim, helps to have God at your back.
My slingshot would say “Stone cold” or “I wanna rock!”
Imagine how cocky Goliath was. Tiny guy challenging you. By the way, he plays the harp.
You could shoot pebbles from the harp strings on days you’re not in the mood to practice. Just theorizing here.
Some midrash (think fan service expanded universe) connects Goliath’s bloodline to Orpah, Ruth’s sister. Naomi told her to go back to her homeland and she did. I guess if you really believe in divine reward, hanging out with your mother in law is really the gold standard. The Ruth story is truly one of my favorites because I want human beings to feel loyalty and obligation even when it’s strenuous.
Another midrash has Goliath falling forward so as to bow to David after being hit. Burn!
David refuses Saul’s armor. A little advice for your fellas- cover your keppies. That’s the cutesy Yiddish word for forehead. Of course if you’re going up against God, you’re screwed no matter what, so if you’re up to it, you can just show up naked.
David charges Goliath. He hits the ground running. I liked Mickey in Rocky but GOD is David’s boxing coach.
David says to Goliath
“You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD.”
Of course my first instinct would be this guy is CUCKOO but at the same time it would make me a little nervous.
Before David takes on Goliath, he tells Saul he’s killed a lion and a bear. Saul was probably like this guy is CUCKOO but also felt a little heartened. Taking on Goliath, one has to at least believe they can take down bears and lions.
In case you’re wondering why he hadn’t taken down tigers, they are not on the same continent people.
