The word VERSE comes from the Latin vertere, “to turn” as an author would move to the next line.

Modern

poetry

is

very

versy.

That’s

why

it’s

worsy.

And vertere is the same root in UNIVERSE, the turning into a whole, a really really big one.

If you want to contemplate the magnitude of the universe, it’s helpful to smoke weed first

Everyone has to have at least one deep philosophical conversation as a young adult while intoxicated-

We also have MULTIVERSE which is useful when you want to bring dead superheroes back to life.

Also CONVERT. Turn something into something else. That includes humans like Paul the Apostle who began life as the Pharisee Saul of Tarsus then kind of got pepper sprayed by Jesus and thereafter became a devout Christian. Or Ruth, a Moabite turned Jewess who became an ancestor of King David, and  was probably the first and last daughter in law in human history to actually like her mother in law, who was reportedly a bit of a bitter grouch.

CONTROVERSY people turning against each other.  If you go on Reddit, pretty much anything can become one. My favorite is “Am I the asshole?”

Introvert, extrovert, turned towards yourself, turned outward. Subvert to turn under. Versatile to turn easily. Divert to turn aside. Reverse to turn back. Ask a ballerina, we can keep going. Your vertigo will also come from vertere.

pervert. The “per” in “pervert” is the same as the “per” in “perfect”indicating a completeness as in you’ve completely turned away. I personally find it completely normal to be obsessed with women’s shoes.

University

The turn to totality to one.  I’m sure it began as a community of intellects vibe but circa 2026 it’s just as readily a commentary on the hive mind in academia.

Adverse turn toward but somehow this came to mean it’s bad but you’re stuck being turned towards it, downer.

Advertise is a little more true to form. Trying to get you to turn towards something.

These concepts often overlap in infomercials where there’s an obligatory crying person explaining their adverse life event that was remedied after buying the Ab Roller or the Clapper.  My house was a pig stye before the ShamWow boohoohoo. There was salami everywhere. I’m thinking about my husband leaving a pile of roast beef in an entirely random spot that wasn’t the kitchen table or counter. He compared it to my empty soda cans. Am I the asshole?

I never had the Clapper but I was an early adopter of voice activated technology. This meant I would change my pitch about a hundred times literally begging my lamp to turn off, much to the amusement of visitors who were less than impressed by my high tech wares. Jealous much people?

As it verteres out, this isn’t even the complete list.
