What happens when the world around us starts changing faster than we can adapt?

A lettuce plant could soon help make meat more sustainable. Wetlands are quietly cleaning polluted rivers, while parks and gardens are becoming lifelines against extreme heat. But elsewhere, butterflies are fleeing warmer habitats, vineyards are racing against earlier harvests, and drought is pushing food systems to the edge.

The climate story is no longer just about what might happen. It is already changing what we eat, where species live, how cities are built, and how communities survive.

Liz Bentley, chief executive of the Royal Meteorological Society, said the number of people under a hosepipe ban is likely to increase from the 23 million already experiencing restrictions. Hotter, drier summers are creating stress on plants and soils, causing mature trees and shrub losses in areas that are not historically prone to drought, researchers found. Site managers reported difficulties in keeping pace with plant health threats and the loss of entire plant groups to disease, including tree species such as box, ash, sweet chestnut and oak. (Financial Times)
