Hello! Let’s start today with an interesting fact: did you know that one of the main beneficiaries of the AI boom is a tiny island in the Caribbean?

I’m talking about Anguilla, the territory that owns the “.ai” domain, which is extremely popular among startups. According to Sherwood, transactions related to this domain have brought the island more than $70M.

This is a small amount by the standards of huge countries, but about half of the annual budget for an island with a population of 15,000.

Anyway, here is your startup recap for the last week.

What’s Happening: Humans&, a new “human-centric AI lab” founded by alumni of Anthropic, xAI, Google, OpenAI, and Meta, announced a $480M seed round at a $4.48B valuation. This series was led by SV Angel and co-founder Georges Harik, with backing that includes Nvidia, Jeff Bezos, GV, and many others.

The company is very early (founded September 2025) and says it’s building an AI system centered on human connection and collaboration (think “connective tissue” for people + AI) and that most of the money will go to compute for training.

The Context: This looks like another “pay for the team, not the product” mega-seed. The recent poster child is Thinking Machines Lab, which closed a $2B seed at a $12B valuation (A16Z-led) while still staying pretty opaque about what it’s shipping.

Add here Safe Superintelligence (reportedly $2B at $32B, with a near-placeholder web presence) and World Labs (came out of stealth in 2024 with $230M at $1B, now reportedly in talks around $5B). And at this point, seed round just means “here’s your compute budget, go invent the rest.”

If you ever wonder why so many people casually call AI a bubble, deals like these are the easiest exhibit A.

What’s Happening: Compared to the half-billion vibe rounds, this one is smaller money, but the story is clear: Synthesia raised $200M at a $4B valuation. The round also included a way for employees to sell some shares (via Nasdaq’s private markets unit), which is the kind of “grown-up startup” detail you usually see once a company has real traction.

Synthesia sells an AI video platform used to create corporate training content with avatars. It crossed $100M in ARR in April 2025, and TechCrunch lists enterprise customers like Bosch, Merck, and SAP. Other reporting says it is already deep in the enterprise channel, with over 90% of the Fortune 100 as clients (including Zoom and Heineken), and it is now pushing into more interactive training experiences.

The Context: Synthesia operates in a formed market: corporate training, internal comms, and “we need 50 versions of this onboarding video in 12 languages by next week.” Budgets exist, buyers exist, and ROI discussions are boring in a good way.

That is why this round reads differently. It is not “fund a famous team to go find product,” it is “fund a business that already sells,” then expand the use cases, including more conversational, role-play style training, not just avatar videos.

Sam Altman Revealed How OpenAI Makes Money Beyond ChatGPT: He shared on X that over the past month, the company has earned over $1B in ARR solely from its API business. This product allows other developers to integrate ChatGPT into their services.

Y Combinator Unveils Major Homepage Redesign: The leading accelerator has significantly revamped its website to offer a founder-first experience. The homepage now features notable alumni sharing their firsthand experiences.

If you are preparing to launch your startup or are already a founder, this update is definitely worth your attention.

AI Gadgets Are Not Dead: Two rhyming news items. According to a statement by chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane, OpenAI plans to unveil its first physical device in the second half of this year. In addition, based on data from The Information, Apple is also developing a wearable AI device based on the updated Siri. This gadget is expected to hit the market in 2027.

I would add that it is quite strange to see large companies planning to launch physical AI devices. Especially after the high-profile failures of AI Pin and Rabbit R1. But who knows, maybe Apple and OpenAI know what they are doing.

Claude is Coming to Your Excel: If you’ve been avoiding diving deep into Excel all these years, it seems like it wasn’t for nothing. Anthropic announced that it’s bringing its chatbot to Microsoft Excel as an add-in. Now, AI will help you with formulas, data analysis, and modeling right in your spreadsheets.

Currently, Claude in Excel requires a Claude Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise subscription. The free plan is not yet supported.

After Humans& pulled in a half-billion seed and Synthesia banked $200M, the “big money” part of this week is already covered. The more interesting question is what got funded far away from the spotlight. Here are a few smaller seed checks where the product idea feels unusually specific.

  • Stilla locked up $5M pre-seed to build a “shared context” layer that sits across tools like Slack, Linear, GitHub, and Notion, so teams (and their AI agents) stop operating off five different versions of reality.

  • Voxelo secured €346k (first close of a pre-seed) for a product-content workflow that turns a short video into a 3D “digital twin” for e-commerce listings. The round is still open, and the company highlights support from Andy Gray (KnownOrigin, ex-eBay).

  • Kime raised €2M pre-seed to track how brands show up inside AI assistants, then turn that into an analytics dashboard: visibility across prompts and platforms, competitor benchmarking, sentiment, and even which domains get cited. The idea is “SEO for AI answers,” but with receipts.
