Hello from Clemo,
The high street is a buzz with Boardmasters! We’ve already had some young revellers through the bookshop but last year was one of our quietest weekends so I’d say if you fancy a mooch around Newquay this weekend might, surprisingly, be a good one to visit during.
StoryFest Newquay started last week, and next week we’ve got Sarah Tagholm and Tom Palmer coming to town! The events are FREE, fully funded by Penguin, and all children will receive a free book to take home with them.

Experts in a Dying Field by Patrick Freyne
The Heathens thought of themselves as ‘the 1000th best band of all time’. Then their tour van crashed, and one of their members died.
Twenty years later, weird things are happening in Dublin, bringing the surviving members of the band together in ways none of them could have anticipated and lifting the lid on mysteries from their shared past.
Lots of Clemo Club members enjoyed this book. It was a fairly easy read with chapters flicking between different points of view, following the lives of the former band members after having aged and changed.
Some people wanted more weird, as mentioned in the marketing material of the book, we thought there would be more spiritual or strange happenings, coincidences and such. There was a chapter from the point of view of a ghost that was wonderful though.
The fox became quite a talking point at the meet up with lots of us trying to decipher it’s meaning. Some likened it to the fox at the end of Fleabag starring Phoebe Waller Bridge - also linked to a Catholic Priest like a character in Experts in a Dying Field. Some religions and cultures have historically seen foxes as cunning, sly and even representing the devil. I think we left book club not too sure what the fox’s role was but we enjoyed it.

Our StoryFest Newquay events kicked off last week and we want to say a big THANK YOU to Wyl Menmuir and Becca Rogers for hosting 2 creative writing workshops for children aged 8-12 and 13- 16. All the youngsters were so engaged and we’ve heard from a few parents that they headed home to continue writing and to read their new books.
We’ve got more FREE events on Thursday 13 August with Sarah Tagholm and Friday 14 August with Tom Palmer. Head over to secure your tickets - they’re free it just helps us know how many books to order.
I’ll be chatting on BBC Radio Cornwall on Saturday morning at 8:50 talking on their Book Club segment if you fancy listening in and hearing me waffle on about books.
