Worth Noticing

I was waiting for the traffic lights to change.

Nothing remarkable was happening. Cars. Red light. A street I’d travelled hundreds of times.

Then I noticed the palm trees.

They lined both sides of the road, silently doing what they’d always done. They hadn’t just suddenly appeared. They hadn’t become more beautiful overnight.

I’d simply never really seen them.

It made me wonder how much of life is like that.

I wonder how much we overlook simply because we’re always looking toward what’s next

But perhapsour life isn’t always waiting somewhere in the future.

Perhaps it’s waiting in our attention, our noticing, our recogniting all that is right in front of us.

Noticing the light filtering through leaves.

The warmth of a mug between your hands.

The stranger who smiles without needing a reason.

The conversation that lingers long after it’s over.

None of these moments ask us to earn them. They don’t require an achievement before they become meaningful.

They simply ask us to notice.

Maybe that’s why joy can feel elusive. Not because it’s absent, but because we’ve become so accustomed to looking beyond the moment we’re in, convinced that the next one will be more deserving of our attention.

The trees reminded me of something simple.

Life doesn’t always need to become more extraordinary.

Sometimes, it asks us to become more available to the ordinary.

And often, that’s where the extraordinary has been waiting all along.
