A Better Manual Focus Mode

As someone who uses manual focus for all of my personal work, finding the right manual focus aid has been an ongoing pursuit of mine. Over this past year I’ve implemented tap to zoom, focus peaking, rangefinder focusing and an experimental focus box mode. I think I’ve come up with a new balanced mode that I’m really happy with.

I love focus peaking but it can be really distracting and take away from the experience. To address this, I’ve added in a focus box that can be moved around by tapping on the screen. Only the area within the box has focus peaking applied so it doesn’t distract from the rest of the composition. To nail focus, I’ve implemented a hold to zoom feature using the shutter button that zooms into the selected area and applies focus peaking to the whole preview.

Here’s a quick video to demonstrate how it works:

video quality isn’t the greatest because the camera display is just 480x800

I don’t have a catchy name for the focus mode yet, just a place holder called “Focus Point”. Would love to get your thoughts on the new mode and any suggestions!

Also, feel free to reach out to me if you’re an existing user of the camera and want to test out this new mode before the official release.

Cheers,

Malcolm

P.S. If Gmail tucked this away in Promotions, drag it into your Primary tab so future updates come straight through. Feel free to reply anytime - I'd love to hear from you.
