Holywater, the Ukrainian founded vertical streaming company backed by Fox Entertainment, described as elevated mobile first episodic built for vertical video (Forbes)

When Fox Entertainment announced its Holywater deal in October, I bookmarked it. I admit the team thought the deal registered as another studio hedging against changing consumption patterns—and we were partly right.

There are now as many as 66+ micro drama apps competing in the vertical space. Vertical micro-dramas generated $700 million in global in-app revenue last quarter, representing nearly 4x year-over-year growth. The format of serialized episodes runs 60-100 seconds, optimized for vertical mobile viewing and has evolved from a Chinese phenomenon to a viable U.S. vertical with demonstrated monetization.

The average revenue per download now sits at $4.70 with monthly ARPU ranging from $20-80 across platforms—including ReelShort, DramaBox, and ShortMax.

The mobile-first vertical format (that Quibi tried to do) isn’t going away anytime soon. But it won’t replace traditional TV/film either. It has however carved out a very real niche for “snackable drama” alongside TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts making a play for “TV”.

Wait, the Callo’s Strategy team is now paying close attention.

Last quarter, the Fox Entertainment’s vertical micro-drama spiked to unknowingly becoming the sandbox Hollywood didn’t know it needed for independent filmmakers and digital creators. A place to play, test, and solve resonance with tangible data to support a fundability conversation for film and TV shows.

Three years ago, pitching vertical mobile footage as feature proof-of-concept would’ve triggered immediate Quibi hallucinations and possibly shown you the door—today, it’s backed by $700 million in quarterly revenue and Fox’s institutional validation.

Callo Strategy

Quick reminder, Quibi quickly peaked and sizzled after offering premium Hollywood production at $100K+ per episode for horizontal content requiring users to rotate phones—a friction point that killed engagement (the natural state is vertical use, the way that people naturally hold a mobile device).

The platform launched in April 2020 with zero consumer validation, bet entirely on founder Jeffrey Katzenberg’s industry relationships, and folded within six months having never proven product-market fit.

Within 12 months, China solved the user and content problem with a micro-drama vertical format. Optimized production budgets to run for $50K-$150K for entire season (60-100 episodes), not per episode. This is a 70 minute movie cut into small bites. Content is shot natively vertical, eliminating rotation friction. Most critically, platforms use freemium models (first 10-20 episodes are free, then paywall on average of $4.70 per download) rather than subscription-only to reduce acquisition friction.

Quibi peaked at 1.5 million—Holywater reportedly has 50 million MAU (Monthly Average Users).

Fox Entertainment’s solution is a hybrid that works nicely for independents. The studio is committing to build a library of vertical-native original IP, actively soliciting projects from independent and digital-first creators across commercial genres. This positions Fox to leverage its differentiated advantages—above and below-the-line talent relationships, production infrastructure, marketing reach.

What makes this particularly significant is it’s format extensibility. Elevated vertical storytelling at scale establishes infrastructure for adjacent mobile-first categories. The door to many possibilities for vertical format entertainment including niche categories like interactive and VR content.

Fox is squarely aiming at Alpha and Gen Z audiences to a tune of $9.5B projected market by 2030 and is moving quickly to bring it’s full weight as opposition to doom scrolling and recapture some of the endless hours of attention on UGC.

It’s promising an IP development pathway of 3-6 month production to stream; 7 billion impressions and an uber promising revenue potential.

Why this is different is that FOX will also bring it’s bankable A-List talent to in front and behind the camera production expertise to play out in indie creator original IP making this a very “elevated” collaboration for testing content globally in social.

Genres include romantic and messy personal dramas, comic book and anime guilty pleasures, YA, and comedy to tap into generational spaces.

What we counsel is to test, test, test your slate for fundable conversations—don’t just show up with a script. This is the exact formula to help you move quickly. If selected you get their talent roster, brutal data on day one of the stream plus potential revenue to fund future projects.

The question is whether independent’s want to move quickly enough to capture the opportunity before the format professionalizes and barriers to entry increase.

The micro-drama test framework isn't perfect and will take honing some new skills like speed, but it's 10-20x better than the traditional path for independent filmmakers.

Fox’s format provides something traditional development lacks: diversified proof-of-concept with institutional backing. Independent producers can test IP viability, collect quantifiable community data, and access distribution quickly—while maintaining downside protection—time and money.

  • Proof-of-Concept Engine: $150K+ micro-drama budget + views + leverage FOX below-the-line talent pipeline to augment your above-the-line Callo team.

  • Revenue Potential: Realistic $50K-$300K potential to reinvest in feature/next project

  • Audience Building: 7-10M views × 0.1% conversion = 10,000 true fan community potential

  • Skills Mastery: Vertical cinematography, fast pacing, mobile-first design = future-proof

  • Traditional Path: 3-8 years from concept to revenue

  • Vertical-Drama Path: 3-6 months from concept to data

  • Traditional: First dollar: 24-96 months

  • Vertical-Drama: First dollar: 5-10 weeks

  • Traditional: You don’t know if it’s failing for 2-3 years + $200K-$2M of investment

  • Micro-Drama: You know within 4 weeks with ability to test audience or 3 months (platform data & revenue) if it’s working

This path helps filmmakers and digital creators validate signals the stories are relevant and profitable enough to see a larger investment with you and your team allowing you to move beyond experimental to strategic, which should accelerate how you’re able to move across multiple formats to grow your project beyond just a film at a fraction of the emotional and financial cost.
