My preference for the mandolin revealed a habit of resigning to my limitations

Feeling constrained by the mandolin has made it easier for me to write songs.

It turns out this comes from a habit of letting my limitations do the work for me when it comes to creative decisions—and life decisions as well.

I need to learn to lead with my creative voice: to prefer the freedom of possibilities that allow me to carve out my vision, rather than rely on the limitations that enable me to merely do my best within constraints.

Creating this video was also a revealing process. I’ll have the whole spiel in my head, full of genuine expression, but then something happens between internal and external. A familiar, elusive mental barrier that has always made it hard for me to express myself authentically, often leaving me frustrated at how I exist in the world.

That bridge between myself and the world, between my creative voice and my work, needs to be built, practiced, and embodied.
