Over-size white structural supports. Wood-paneled walls. Blue and turquoise carpet giving not quite #PDXCarpet vibes. Natural light. And so much glass.
This is the new Concourse E designed by PGAL at Washington Dulles International Airport. Workers are putting the finishing touches on the 14-gate space due to open later this year as the first step in what could be a $22 billion modernization of the main international gateway to the national capital region.
“This gives our customers a lot more opportunity to enjoy and relax as they’re traveling out through Dulles airport,” said Richard Golinowski, the manager of Dulles at operator the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, on a hard-hat tour of the new concourse on Wednesday. He added that the space is “transformational” for the airport.
I’d argue that the design itself will not transform Dulles — it’s good, not great — but the plan Concourse E is part of will transform the airport for decades to come if built out as the Trump administration aims.
