Hi Friends. The term “mayday” has two meanings: it is sometimes a distress call (must be issued 3 times, and I’ve done at least that to the Facebook gods, as has HarperCollins’ social media team), and it is also a celebration of the midway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice.
I’m not at “celebrate” yet emotionally about this. However, I’m sooooo grateful to all of you who are here on Substack, and I want to help you get oriented to how we can communicate here. It is not my intention to use this platform to replace the Facebook group; I very much want the Facebook group back and am doing everything possible to make that happen.
However, I’m also trying to be realistic, and I know that even when these things are resolved it usually takes weeks to months for people to be reinstated. I was already researching alternative community platforms, but I’m going to double down my efforts on that mission.
I love Substack as a writers’ platform, but I’m not sure whether it can provide the community features we want; I’m working on figuring that out right now too.
More immediately, I have to get to WGN Chicago, which is why I’m about to cut this one short, but here’s another way to communicate that’s quicker and more interactive. It’s the Substack “notes” feature, which is closer to a Facebook post. I just put one up here to get us started and to give you all a place to chat:
More soon, and thank you again for being here. ❤️🔥
