At Buoyant, we’ve been researching the intersection of energy efficiency and AI infrastructure for the past 2 years. It’s hard to ignore the unprecedented demand for data center capacity driven by advancements in AI. However the grid and power availability are bottlenecks for future AI growth — something data center operators are scrambling to solve.

A few things stood out to us in the research:

  • Power is becoming the central constraint. The grid has become the fundamental bottleneck to bringing new data centers online. Utilities face up to 7 year backlogs for new power connections, a timeline that’s incompatible with the speed of AI development and deployment.

  • Model inference will take over training in total load, as AI spreads into everyday workflows and tools. Because inference is always-on and latency-sensitive, it changes how capacity needs to be planned and optimized.

  • The economics of AI are changing. We can’t rely on hardware improvements alone. Orchestration, energy integration, and better software layers are becoming essential.

This constraint-driven environment is what makes efficient compute not just valuable, but inevitable. Our latest blog breaks down the landscape, the constraints, and the opportunities we’re most excited about.

We’re thrilled to announce our investment in Hammerhead AI, a company helping data centers unlock meaningful amounts of hidden power capacity without waiting on new grid connections or expensive infrastructure upgrades.

Hammerhead’s insight is straightforward but powerful: on average data centers are operating at 30-50% utilization. This leads to stranded capacity, or power headroom that isn’t being utilized because the underlying systems aren’t orchestrated dynamically. Hammerhead’s first product, ORCA (Orchestrated RL Control Agents), coordinates power, cooling, and computing in real time, allowing operators to unlock an additional 30% capacity.

Led by ex-AutoGrid executives, the Hammerhead team has the experience to scale power orchestration at the GW scale. Buoyant led the over-subscribed $10M seed round, winning a competitive process thanks to our deep research into the category.

And as we lean into the gift giving season, we are spotlighting Beni, a tech-meets-resale platform designed to simplify sustainable shopping. Whether you’re gift shopping or hunting for your own holiday treat, Beni steps in as a smart filter across the resale marketplace so you don’t end up juggling 500 tabs comparing listings. Users love how it surfaces great finds to shop for style, not fads. If you’re looking to trim the clutter, stay budget-savvy, and gift thoughtfully this year, check out Beni. Keep an eye out for more news on Beni features on their newsletter.

Buoyant is keeping this newsletter short since we recently shared our insights on climate risk intelligence (here if you missed it!).

As we head into the holiday season, we want to express our gratitude for your readership and support. For those celebrating in the U.S., have a wonderful and restful Thanksgiving week! We’ll see you soon with more insights.
