It’s been sometime, I know. My apologies, I do that sometimes… Disappear that is. I needed to take a step back for a while, focus on the growing season, and to be honest, the dopamine bubble popped, and I had to take a break from the weekly posts. Now that the season is starting to slow down, I’ve been retrospective about getting back into the old routine, or at least something similar to it.
That’s not to say that I’ve not been writing. I’ve been hyper focusing on my cartomancy book, and written quite a few posts, some reviews, and I’ve got tons of things to share, but here’s what’s coming up first:
Get ready for a deep dive into a new solo RPG mechanic I’m building. It’s designed to be a creative engine for your stories, helping you generate plot twists, uncover secrets, and even map out dungeons, all with a few handfuls of polyhedral dice
It all comes down to “Connections.”
You’ll be rolling two dice from a set that includes everything from a humble d3 to a mighty d20. The magic happens in the relationship between the two numbers you roll:
Direct Connection (Doubles): This is a major story truth—a critical clue or a fated event. Pay close attention!
Regular Connection (Sequence or Multiples): These are clear, meaningful links that drive the plot forward, like discovering a cause and effect.
Disconnection (No Relation): This is where things get interesting. A disconnection is a lie, a red herring, or a dead end. It might not be true now, but it plants a seed of doubt that could sprout into something later.
The dice themselves tell a story, too. A small die, like a d4, might give you a vague rumor, while a large die, like a d20, points to something cosmic and world-changing. Pairing a small die with a giant one is like finding a tiny key that unlocks a massive door.
How does this actually create a story?
I’m building custom tables of verbs and nouns for each die size. The results are weighted so that low rolls tend to be more negative or challenging, mid-range are neutral, and high rolls are positive. This creates a natural “tone curve” you can play with! If your character is already in a rough spot, you might choose to roll dice that have a higher chance of a negative result, leaning into the tragedy.
This system isn’t meant to write the story for you. Think of it as a creative co-pilot, or a GM emulator that gives you prompts, creates tension, and pushes your narrative down unexpected paths you might not have chosen yourself.
In the full post, I’ll give you the complete set of tables and a simple guide to start forging your own connections. Get your dice ready.
Until then, I hope everyone is doing amazing and if not, let’s work on focusing on things that help push us towards feeling better. Appreciate you all and we’ll meet again soon…
