Helloooo my friends. A truly packed last two weeks…the Knicks win was so fun to be a part of in NYC. The energy in the city was electric the Saturday that they won and again last Thursday after the parade. I skipped the daytime party but witnessed a lot of drunk folks still screaming “Go Knicks!” in their jerseys and bootleg shirts around the streets of Williamsburg last night.
I had back to back Gemini birthdays to celebrate that following weekend then some great stories to work on since then. I took off for Juneteenth1 and spent last weekend eating some of the best food around the city: pasta at Locanda in Clinton Hill, the steak salad lunch special at Keen’s with my friend EJ and her sweet and hilarious sons, a burger at Ripper’s after a windy beach morning and a crab boil at Brooklyn Crab after an afternoon drink at Sunny’s in Red Hook. Can’t think of a better way to spend a long weekend2.
I finally saw Michael in theaters last week, which filled me with a lot of complicated feelings but ultimately left me listening to Thriller for the past week and spending a lot of time reading the various, insane MJ wiki pages. On Tuesday, I attended the Angels in America listening party for their new album Asphalt Green at Night Club 101 which was delicious, and on Wednesday, I caught Mark Ronson and Cosmo at Signal. I could sense Cosmo had also recently seen Michael because she played a very Jackson family-heavy set towards the end of the night: MJ’s “Workin’ Day and Night,” Rebbie Jackson’s “Centipede”3 and Janet Jackson’s “When I Think of You.” I kinda need more Eighties music at the clubs again!
In some work news, I wrote the copy for a new show at Arsenal Gallery in Central Park. It’s a celebration of photographer Jack Vartoogian’s images from SummerStage, in celebration of the concert series’ 40th anniversary. The exhibit is open every day until August 21st!
On July 22nd, I’ll be moderating a conversation with Julia Wolf for the Grammy Museum at the Greene Space. She’ll be performing an acoustic set after we chat. If you love “In My Room” as much as me, grab a ticket and say hi!
