Part 1 of 2

After receiving a ton of responses about my first Therapy Post on here, I decided to reach out to a buddy of mine, Trinity Toft, who happens to be an amazing therapist up here in Portland. I wanted to get her insight on men’s relationship with therapy and the underlying issues she sees as recurring themes. She gave me a ton to chew on, and introduced me to a very cool new way of looking at psychology.

I met Trinity in grad school, where I learned that not only did we have the same taste in fiction and music, but we were born on the same day, in the same year, within hours of each other, in nearby cities! Talk about a sister from another mister. We’re totally the Power Twins from the old cartoon, only our powers are writing weird stories and talking about psychology. I’m very grateful that she took the time to sit down with me. Below is a condensed interview of our convo. I hope you find it as enlightening as I did.

Brian: So, one of the biggest questions I get is from women who read the Substack asking how to get a man who’s resistant to therapy to open up to it. Anytime the subject comes up, he shuts down or gets defensive. I actually relate to that. I know I did it before I started seeing a therapist, and I think it’s a common thing with dudes. I’m sure there’s no silver bullet, but have you found anything— anecdotally or professionally—that helps men become more open to therapy?
