Occupation media, Tavria Kherson, showed the aftermath of a Ukrainian drone strike on a fuel truck at a gas station in Skadovsk, occupied Kherson Oblast. This drone strike is part of Ukraine’s expanding middle strike capabilities, resulting in strikes like these — 62 kilometers southeast of Kherson city.

These are vital systems, as the detectors allow civilians to take life-saving action to avoid being struck by Russian drone operators. Each detector is roughly $175 USD or 150 Euro. Ukraine has ramped up Class III UAV strikes at depths of 50–200 kilometers across the entire front, particularly in the Kherson region. On 27 May, Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, Mykhailo Fedorov, announced on X that Ukraine was embarking on a middle-strike campaign aimed at disrupting Russian logistics along the front line and degrading Russian combat capabilities through shortages of fuel, food, and ammunition.

Strikes in occupied Kherson play an integral role in Ukraine’s middle-strike campaign, as southern Kherson Oblast serves as a logistical lifeline for Crimea. Two critical chokepoints have been targeted in particular: the Chonhar Bridge, which connects Kherson Oblast to eastern Crimea, and the E97 highway, which links Crimea to western Kherson Oblast.

On 22 May, roughly a week before Fedorov’s announcement, the occupation governor of Kherson Oblast, Vladimir Saldo, signed a decree restricting traffic along the eastern approach on the E105 (R-280) highway connecting Kherson Oblast to Dzhankoi via the Chonhar Bridge.

Photos: Vladimir Saldo

“I have signed a decree temporarily restricting truck traffic on a section of the R-280 “Novorossiya” federal highway in the direction of the Dzhankoy automobile checkpoint.

This decision is effective from 12:00 AM on May 21, 2026, until further notice.

This restriction does not apply to military cargo, special cargo, medicine, infrastructure restoration equipment, fuel, perishable goods, and certain essential food products.

I ask carriers to take this temporary restriction into account when planning their routes.”

Vladimir Saldo

Just one day before Fedorov’s announcement, Saldo issued another statement warning drivers about the growing threat posed by Ukrainian middle-strike drones operating over occupied Kherson’s road network.

“Dear residents and guests of the Kherson region!

In connection with the current operational situation, I urge everyone planning trips on the region’s roads to exercise increased caution.

In recent days, attempts by the enemy to attack transport and road infrastructure, including on certain sections of roads, have been observed. My colleague, the Governor of the Zaporizhzhia region, Yevhen Balitsky, previously reported on a similar situation: the enemy is deliberately using drones against civilian vehicles and infrastructure in frontline regions.

I ask drivers and passengers to be as vigilant as possible. If possible, plan your route in advance, choose to travel during daylight hours, and avoid unnecessary stops on open sections of roads. If you notice suspicious objects, damaged equipment, drone debris, or the aftermath of an attack, do not approach the scene and immediately report it to the emergency services.

I particularly urge drivers of civilian transport, carriers, and employees of utility, medical, emergency, and supply organizations not to neglect safety measures.”

Vladimir Saldo

Almost two weeks later, on 07 June, Saldo announced the closure of the easternmost — and arguably safest — approach to Crimea from occupied Kherson Oblast. This decision further constrained access routes into Crimea, forcing both Russian logistics and civilian traffic onto western routes that fall deeper within the range of Ukrainian middle-strike drones.

Currently, only two routes remain available for travel between occupied Kherson Oblast and Crimea, both of which ultimately converge at the chokepoint of Chaplynka. This is significant because Chaplynka remains within Kherson Oblast, meaning Ukraine can sever access to Armyansk and, by extension, the remaining overland routes into Crimea.

Photos: Vladimir Saldo

“⚠️ Due to the temporary restriction of vehicle traffic through the Dzhankoy checkpoint, travel through the Kherson region to Crimea and back is carried out along alternative routes through the Armyansk checkpoint:

1️⃣ Through Gromovka :

Melitopol - Novoalekseevka - Novotroitskoye - Gromovka - Chaplynka - Armyansk

2️⃣ Via Askania-Nova :

Melitopol - Novoalekseevka - Novotroitskoye - Chkalovo - Askania-Nova - Chaplynka - Armyansk”

Vladimir Saldo

Roughly 70 kilometers separate the Chonhar Bridge and Armyansk, but both routes add on over 150 kilometers to any drivers seeking to come from territories in the east toward Crimea. And if trying to reach Dzhankoi, then these routes add on an additional 70 kilometers of driving in Crimea itself.

The rerouting of traffic may have seemingly provided a temporary solution for maintaining logistical flows as Ukrainian drones concentrated on the Chonhar corridor. However, the additional mileage came at a time when fuel shortages emerged in both occupied Kherson Oblast and Crimea, producing a compounding strategic effect in Ukraine’s favor.

On 11 June, Saldo announced that some public transportation services were being temporarily suspended due to fuel shortages.

“Due to a shortage of automotive fuel in a number of municipal districts of the Kherson region, the operation of passenger transport has been temporarily adjusted. Some routes have been reduced, and certain routes have been suspended until the supply of fuel stabilizes.”

Vladimir Saldo

Later that same day, Ukrainian FP-2 UAVs struck the Armyansk Bridge and the bridges at Stavky and Myrne, sealing off the alternative routes to Crimea. These were the only bridges along the alternative routes published by Saldo capable of carrying motor traffic across the North Crimean canal and onto the E97. This forces traffic to use backroads to reach the crossing at Kalanchak — about 35 kilometers deeper into Ukrainian middle-strike drone range. This also turns the North Crimean Canal into a major geographic obstacle further isolating Crimea from the mainland.

Ukraine’s middle-strike campaign in southern Ukraine appears to be producing three effects. First, Russian logistics routes have been diverted onto longer and less efficient routes. Second, the concentration of traffic onto the two western routes has pushed vehicles closer to key chokepoints that are more vulnerable to Ukrainian drone strikes, while simultaneously increasing strain on fuel supplies and vehicle maintenance requirements. And third, completely sealing off mainland access to Crimea.

These compounded effects could also enable Ukraine to more effectively target logistics networks in the rear areas of Russian units deployed along the Dnipro River west of Crimea, potentially contributing to additional withdrawal of forces similar to that of the 337th Guards Air Assault Regiment.

The following is a chronological catalogue of geolocated strikes from Ukraine Daily Update Map that best showcase the development of the middle strike campaign in southern Kherson Oblast and Crimea.

This week saw the third highest total of Russian drone attacks launched on Kherson Oblast since tracking began, with 4690 total drone attacks reported by Oleksandr Prokudin – almost 1000 less attacks than last week (5640). In the past 74 weeks, Russian forces have carried out at least 173,323 drone attacks in Kherson Oblast.

Ukrainian C-UAS operations again intercepted 93% of Russian drone attacks this past week, maintaining their interception rate from the past two weeks. Inside Khersonska Urban Hromada, interception rates increased from 90% to 93%. In the surrounding communities, interception rates decreased from 94% to 93%.

Russian attacks on Khersonska Urban Hromada increased by over 400 this week, with Russian forces conducting 1966 drone attacks this week, compared to 1562 a week ago. Russian forces attacking outside the city conducted over 1300 fewer attacks (2724) than last week (4078).

Successful Russian drone attacks in Kherson Oblast decreased by 75 — from 389 last week to 312 this week. Successful Russian drone attacks outside Kherson city decreased as well — from 244 a week ago to 185 this week. Inside the city, successful attacks fell from 145 last week to 127 this week — the fifth highest total since January 2026.

Prokudin has now published two weeks worth of Shahed interception data, with 272 intercepted last week and 75 intercepted this week. In the lead-up to the massive strike on urban centers across Ukraine, Russian used between 150-200 Shahed UAVs each night, creating a stockpile to be unleashed on the night of 14 June and early morning of 15 June. Southern Ukraine was largely not targeted in the massive combined strike, as Russian forces focused their missile and UAV strikes on Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Kyiv.

East of Kherson city along the Inhulets River, Russian drone attacks wounded a 77-year-old woman from Dariivka and a 50-year-old man in Zarichne.

West of Kherson, a 50-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman were wounded by Russian artillery shelling in Bilozerka.

In Pivnichnyi Raion, a subdistrict of Centralnyi Raion, a Russian drone struck a car, wounding a 49-year-old man and two women (30 & 53).

In Korabelnyi Raion, a 51-year-old woman was killed by a Russian drone strike and a 57-year-old man was wounded by another. In the afternoon, Russian shelling wounded a 14-year-old boy in Korabelnyi Raion.

“Russians continue to mercilessly shell residential areas of Kherson.

This afternoon, the Korabelnyi district of the city came under enemy fire. As a result of another shelling, several private homes were significantly damaged.

Also, a 14-year-old boy, who was at home at the time, was injured by this strike. He was taken to the hospital with a concussion, blast injuries, and a closed head injury.

Doctors are currently providing the child with all necessary assistance.”

In the northeast corner of Kherson Raion, a 56-year-old couple were wounded in Chaikyne when their car was struck by a Russian drone.

West of Kherson, a 78-year-old man and 76-year-old woman were wounded by Russian shelling in Bilozerka. On the western edge of the city, a 58-year-old woman was wounded by a Russian drone attack in Korabelnyi Raion.

“Today, the Russian occupiers once again targeted a “dual-purpose vehicle.” The enemy used a drone to attack a vehicle delivering groceries in the central part of the city.

Fortunately, no people were injured as a result of this terrorist attack. The minibus is awaiting long-term repairs. Details are in the video.”

In Centralnyi Raion, two men (66 & 67) were wounded by Russian remotely-laid Pryanyk anti-personnel mines.

In Pivnichnyi Raion, two men (40 & 52) were wounded by Russian drone attacks. The next morning, Shanko posted footage from a late night Molniya strike that wounded a 63-year-old woman in the Pivnichnyi area. A 56-year-old municipal worker was wounded by a remotely-laid Pryanyk landmine.

Video: Yaroslav Shanko

“In the morning, residents of a private house in the Central District gathered in the yard to collect the remains of the enemy’s “Molniya” type drone and construction debris, which there was a lot of after the hit. The occupiers attacked residential areas with a strike drone around 10:00 PM.

Windows flew out of the homes and a 63-year-old woman’s leg was injured by glass.

She was provided with the necessary medical assistance. Social workers spoke with the victims, advised them and planned the priority measures to eliminate the consequences of this attack.”

A civilian was killed and 5 civilians were wounded on 10 June – all in Korabelnyi Raion. Russian shelling wounded a 57-year-old man, a 47-year-old woman, and a 10-year-old girl.

Russian drones wounded three civilians in Korabelnyi Raion. A 39-year-old municipal utility worker was killed in the Zhytloselyshche area in central Korabelnyi Raion. Another municipal utility worker, a 43-year-old man, was wounded in a separate attack. A 52-year-old woman was wounded by a third drone attack.

Later that night, a Russian Molniya attacked Korabelnyi Raion again, damaging a medical facility.

Video: Yaroslav Shanko

“...at around 23:20, a Russian drone attacked a medical facility in the Korabelnyi district.

The enemy strike hit the building. As a result, part of the laboratory building was damaged, windows were broken, garages and outbuildings were damaged.

Strikes on medical facilities are not an accident. This is a deliberate tactic of the aggressor state, which grossly violates the norms of international humanitarian law. Russia continues to purposefully strike at civilian infrastructure, on which the safety, health and lives of civilians depend.

The video shows the consequences of another war crime by Russia against the civilian population of Kherson.”

Drones wounded 4 civilians in Kherson on 11 June: a 46-year-old man in Dniprovskyi Raion and a 58-year-old man and two women (36 & 58) in Korabelnyi Raion. Also in Korabelnyi Raion, Russian shelling wounded three elderly civilians: a 78-year-old man and two women (71 & 75).

To the west of the city, three women (60, 66 & 69) were wounded by shelling in the town of Bilozerka.

Video: Yaroslav Shanko

“Russian terrorists have been attacking Kherson since the morning. At around 4:00 a.m., the enemy dropped an explosive device from a drone onto the territory of one of the markets in the Korabelnyi district.

As a result of the attack, a fire broke out, destroying several shops and kiosks. A minibus with groceries burned down. According to its owner, the explosion threw his car several meters away. Rescuers from the State Emergency Service extinguished the fire. According to preliminary information, there were no injuries.”

In Dniprovskyi Raion, a 73-year-old woman was killed by a Russian drone strike. In neighboring Antonivka, a 51-year-old woman was wounded by a remotely-laid PFM-1 anti-personnel landmine.

Fortunately, according to preliminary information, there were no injuries. Information about the consequences of the attack is being clarified.

What the houses damaged by KABs now look like is in the photo.”

Later, a school and its surrounding premises in Dniprovskyi Raion were heavily damaged after a barrage of Russian artillery.

Photos: Yaroslav Shanko

“The Russian occupiers continue to “fight” with civilian infrastructure. One of the educational institutions in the Dnipro district of the city came under enemy shelling.
