Welcome to the eleventh installment of Behind the Business, a series where I deep dive into the inner workings of building a multi-million dollar content business and media platform. Over the last 4 years, I’ve written two books, grown my social platforms to well over 1 million followers, and learned a TON along the way. I am so happy to have you here - and I know you will love this series. Expect new BTB articles every other week (ish) - and if you have a topic or a question you’d like me to dig into, please leave it in the comments! xx
I (used to) take a lot of pride in the fact that I ran my business solo. For years, I did literally everything by myself to not only build BYB, but keep her alive.
From content strategy and planning, filming, editing, execution, digital products, email strategy, writing for Substack, website design, podcast filming and editing… the whole shebang. The only area where I have had help has been with my brand partnerships through an agency, where I have a manager who brokers my deals and takes commission only on the money she makes me.
Beyond that, there were instances here or there where I’d hire a consultant for a defined project, but I’ve otherwise done everything myself. It’s easier that way, which is what I’ve told myself for years.
I’ve always struggled with the idea of paying someone to do something that I can do on my own. But I’ve made a few realizations that have since prompted me to reconsider!
Today, I am going to dive deep on my thought process behind hiring an assistant, how I knew it was finally time, and what I was looking for in those who threw their names in the ring.
If you have a business and are not sure if you’re ready for help, or how to even approach hiring someone, hopefully I can provide some insight to help you make that decision.
