Motel 6 may leave the light on for you, but Illinois probably will not.

This week’s Substack contains a video recap of our recent trip to MISO, the energy grid operator for a large portion of the central United States. These people are the ones who work 24/7 to direct power where it needs to go all across the grid - and by the looks of it, Illinois is not doing our fair share.

Meanwhile, this week brought the first special investigating committee hearing into Democrat State Rep. Carol Ammons, who was recently indicted on federal charges of fraud, and scheming to enrich herself with kickbacks. As a reminder, I was one of 11 members who signed the petition to investigate Rep. Ammons.

First Investigating Committee Hearing Into Champaign Democrat Rep. Carol Ammons

The committee of 6 fellow representatives met on Thursday to begin proceedings that will determine whether or not Rep. Ammons will be disciplined, or potentially even expelled from the House.

While this hearing lasted less than an hour, it has now broken the ice on investigating a fellow member, a tool the House has used only a handful of times this century. These are rare moments - but they are important - as we work to make sure government officials who abuse their positions are held accountable. The next hearing date will be announced in the coming weeks.

Please watch this recap video of my colleagues in the Freedom Caucus and I, published immediately after the hearing, to learn more!

Illinois Comes in Dead Last for Fiscal Stability

ILLINOIS – The 2026 Best States rankings from U.S. News & World Report assess the performance of the 50 U.S. states using 71 metrics across eight categories. The data behind the rankings aims to show how well states serve their residents in a variety of ways.

But according to U.S. News & World Report, Illinois ranks just #37 overall — and dead last, #50, in Fiscal Stability.

The numbers tell the story:

  • #50 Fiscal Stability

  • #41 Economy

  • #38 Opportunity

  • #45 Natural Environment

Illinois has every ingredient needed to be one of the best states in America. What we need is better fiscal discipline, a stronger business climate, responsible budgeting, and leaders focused on making Illinois more affordable and competitive.

The Land of Lincoln should never be dead last. Illinois can — and must — do better.
