The movement to separate Illinois has been around in one form or another for years. While it has gone by different names, the reason behind it all comes back to one central theme - Illinois’ citizens and taxpayers feel completely abused by their government.
In the last two years or so - one of the most aggressive abuses has come in the form of outrageous electric bills. Just another reason for working families to want to leave Illinois, or for Illinois policies to leave them. This issue is part of what drove my colleagues and I to visit a very important location in our electrical grid last week.
Until Illinois reverses course and takes notes from our surrounding states, we’ll keep having two common trends - you either leave Illinois, or you really want to.

Hearing From The Power Grid Operators Themselves
A trip to the midcontinent independent system operator (MISO) in Indiana
This week I traveled with a group of legislators, local officials and guests to visit MISO’s facility in Carmel, Indiana. The midcontinent independent system operator is the electric grid operator for the central United States. Their job is to ensure power flows reliably and efficiently across 15 states and the Canadian province of Manitoba. Additionally, MISO facilitates the buying and selling of electricity in its region and partners with its stakeholders to plan the grid of the future.
This Illinois delegation traveled to MISO for an educational tour of the facility, and grid control room, as well as thoughtful policy discussions about future stability of our electrical grid.
Illinois has a large role to play in the stability of our electrical grid - and right now, it seems our state is much more of a load liability than a reliable generator of power. We must get back to baseload generation, stop premature plant retirements, and work to lower utility bills. Our state can and should do better!

New Illinois: Why Citizens Believe Two States Is The Solution
All across Illinois, counties are voting to separate Chicagoland, or annex into Indiana. The Democrats want to make fun of these efforts - but their swiftness to dismiss these efforts is likely out of embarrassment for their failed public policies.
After all, people want a New Illinois because the Democrats have destroyed this one.

Maybe There Is 1 Democrat Left In Springfield With Integrity?
Let me share some inside baseball with you -
Fred Crespo and I have been serving together for a decade in the Illinois House. Fred is a Democrat, and I am a conservative. Naturally - we disagree about 85% of the time.
However - Fred Crespo is a good man, and a man of integrity. He is one of the few people left on the other side of the aisle that will actually question his majority party colleagues on spending bills, appropriations, and tax increases.
That’s why he was kicked out of the Democratic caucus, and stripped of his staff, by Speaker Chris Welch.
Speaker Welch made it apparent - if you challenge his authority, or even dare to ask questions about fiscal discipline, you will be punished. He loves a good “gag order.”
Well, Mr. Speaker now finds himself in hot water as he has been tied up in allegations of covering up sexual harassment, not properly handing corruption and ethics issues, and engaging in inappropriate conduct on social media.
The conduct is enough for a Democratic State Rep to call for Welch’s resignation.
Following the November general election, a new vote for Speaker will take place. Undoubtedly, Springfield politics is going to continue to get messier the rest of 2026.
