As communities across Central and Southern Illinois recover from devastating storms and tornadoes, our thoughts and prayers remain with the families, farmers, businesses, and first responders working through the aftermath. While we are grateful there were no reported fatalities, the damage serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength that define our communities. As recovery efforts continue, I remain committed to helping connect residents with available resources and ensuring the needs of the 107th District are heard in Springfield. At the same time, as families work to rebuild and manage rising costs at home, state government continues moving in the opposite direction—signing a record-high budget, proposing new taxes and fees, expanding benefits for those here illegally, and advancing policies that make Illinois less affordable, less competitive, and less attractive for working families. This week, we examine the priorities coming out of Springfield and what they mean for the future of our state.

Storms, including tornado activity across Central and Southern Illinois, caused significant damage to homes, businesses, farms, and infrastructure, along with downed trees and power lines. Thousands of customers across the region were left without power.
According to the Effingham County Emergency Management Agency, an “impactful tornado” traveled approximately 12-15 miles through the northern part of the county, causing damage to multiple residences, businesses, and farms. Some injuries were reported, though none were serious.
Rep. Halbrook reminded community members to remain alert for hazardous conditions. “We are blessed that despite the severity of these storms, there were no fatalities. I will be sure to work with the state to keep the 107th district update as recovery efforts take place”
Across the region, the extent of damage remains under assessment. It is reported that there were at least seven tornadoes during the weather event, which left 55,000 customers without power in Illinois at the height of the storm.

The Illinois Tollway
Instead of Springfield and the Tollway’s executive leadership responsibly administering the money they have already been given, they now want YOU to pay for their messes by increasing your tolls by 45 cents per toll beginning January 1, 2027. This is nothing more than a sneaky ‘tax’ aimed at funding their ‘Driving Connections’ capital program which includes roadway improvements, bridge projects and congestion relief efforts. (Didn’t we get federal COVID money for that?)
