A classic that the household always craves, and it’s so good reheated.

INGREDIENTS:

For the Meat Sauce

  • 1 pound 90% lean ground beef

  • ½ pound ground Italian sausage

  • 1 cup diced yellow onion

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1½ tsp Italian seasoning

  • ½ tsp fennel seeds, crushed

  • ¼ tsp kosher salt

  • ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper

  • 2 tbsp tomato paste

  • 28 oz can whole San Marzano tomatoes, puréed

  • 8 oz can tomato sauce

  • ¼ cup red wine or low-sodium beef broth

  • ¼ cup water

  • 1-2 tsp granulated sugar

For the Ricotta Mixture

  • 1 large egg 15 oz part-skim ricotta cheese

  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh basil (or 1½ tsp dried basil)

  • ½ tsp kosher salt

  • ¼ tsp black pepper

For the Assembly

  • 9 uncooked lasagna noodles

  • 8 oz shredded mozzarella (about 2 cups), divided

  • 1 cup finely shredded Parmesan, divided
