I found these photos in my archive recently: it was 2018, I’d only had a film camera for a few months, and I was so excited about using it. I think lots of them are nice, although I’d love to go back now and take some slightly nicer ones.
We were in Lagos, Portugal, on a family holiday, staying in a sweet little house adorned with tiles, on a hill that tumbled down towards the sea. We bought fresh vegetables and fish at the market every day and ate it, grilled, on our tiny, shady terrace. If you walked a little further there were great sandy cliffs, bright blue waves crashing below. My mum sent a photo to my then-nearly-ninety-year-old granny: ‘hello from Lagos!’. ‘Oh!’ replied my granny. ‘That doesn’t look like Nigeria at all’. She had, it turned out, been quietly questioning our choice of family holiday destination for months. ‘I wasn’t going to say anything’, she said, ‘but I did think it seemed like an unlikely choice’.
Lagos, Portugal, was not an unlikely choice: it was lovely.
