Happy New Moon!
And hello again. I was quiet for a month, doing retreat and hanging out with my teacher Lama Lena, and letting myself catch up with the momentum of myself. But now: summer’s here! And in this map of bardos we’ve been riding all year, summer is wind season.
Spring got the world all fired up and now wind gets it movin’. This is the season of energy and accomplishment, of doing and growing and gettin’ where you’re going.
So for the next three months, the questions we'll be exploring go something like: where does your movement come from? how does it move? and who's the one doing all this jazz, anyway?
I’m kickstarting this season of movement by clearing out my home, room by room. Like a strong wind blowing through, planters and plates and glassware have already been swept out of my kitchen cupboards. The closets are next, then the living room and my studio. Unfinished books, props from old music video shoots, a pandemic-era exercise bike. All of these are things that have stopped moving. They’ve been sitting in dark corners holding their breath, and a place full of held breath starts to suffocate.
Some things transform: We turned broken patio furniture into a vegetable bed and now tomatoes and beans and lettuce are growing out of it. But most stuff goes to the sidewalk.
Where we live (by Trinity Bellwoods Park in Toronto) the neighbourhood moves like a vibrant breeze in summer. People flowing to or from the park or the bars on Ossington or some alleyway cookout. Anything set out at the sidewalk gets carried off within a day or two. Where to? Who knows! Things travel happily from full hands to empty ones.
Last weekend, while I was sitting around with Lama Lena after retreat, shooting the shit and drinking wine, she said in passing, “Money is just stale energy. And energy needs to move.” Money, stuff, limbs… life itself: it circulates or it stagnates. Things need to move if anything new is to pass through. So all this clearing I’m doing is like a good plumbing job: The pipes are backed up and I’m jumpstarting the current that flows through this house, through the hood, beyond, and back.
The same goes for the bodymind. The Buddhist yogic tradition has an image for the internal energy that governs experience: Mind is like a rider and the inner wind is like a horse running wild through the terrain of the body. Where the wind-horse goes, the mind goes. Where it gets stuck, the mind gets stuck.
So this past month has been an internal space-clearing, too: Being in retreat with long lost buddies, sharing belly laughs and bummed cigarettes with my teacher, tending quietly to plants, to animals, to the vibes. As Thoreau says, ‘Simplify, Simplify’. We do what we need to uncomplicate the heart and open it to possibility. The bodymind becomes a receptive space for the magic of summer’s motion. 🌬️😎🌀
Come sit with me on the full moon and we’ll work with these inner winds directly, with one of my favourite practices: the nine cleansing breaths. Deets below!
See you soon,
❤️ Lama Tasha
P.S. My 250 houseplants spent spring making babies, and the babies need to circulate too. If you're in/around Toronto and want some greenery, DM me!
Bodhisavage is reader-supported. If you like your practice playful, your dives deep & your wisdom a little weird, come along for the ride!✌️
