• Jesus Calls Us to Mercy, Not Character Assassination
• Create a Holy Moment in this Political Season
Brothers and sisters in Christ,
Jesus commanded us to follow Him and to walk as He walked. When we obey that command—when we choose mercy over judgment, forgiveness over accusation, and grace over the weaponizing of another man’s past—we create holy moments. These are moments in which the character of Christ is made visible in us.
The Word of God declares: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
That includes every one of us. It includes candidates with imperfect pasts. And it includes those who are currently bringing up old failures as if they themselves never needed mercy.
Jesus said, “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” (Matthew 7:1-2)
When believers begin cataloguing another man’s past sins in order to destroy him, we are doing the very thing Scripture forbids. We are bad-mouthing a brother. We are refusing the holy moment Christ calls us to create.
Paul commands us: “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:32)
And again: “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.” (Colossians 3:13)
If a man has repented and turned to Christ, if old things are passed away and he is a new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17), then the church has no business keeping the old charge alive for political advantage. That is not discernment. That is the opposite of being Christ-like.
Character matters. Wisdom matters. Accountability matters. No one is calling for blindness. But there is a wide difference between sober evaluation of present fruit and the gleeful dredging up of past sins to disqualify a brother. The first is prudence. The second refuses the holy moment Jesus invites us to create.
Scripture shows us again and again what Christ-like redemption looks like:
• The father of the prodigal ran to embrace the son who had wasted everything.
• Saul the persecutor became Paul the apostle.
• The thief on the cross heard the words, “To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.”
• Peter, who denied the Lord three times, was restored and commissioned.
In each case God created a holy moment of mercy. He calls us to do the same.
By choosing not to define a brother by his worst chapter, by speaking as those who have been forgiven much, by refusing to join the chorus of accusation, we walk as Christ walked. We create holy moments in a season that desperately needs them.
We are not called to be the prosecution. We are called to be the people who remember that we too were once enemies of God, and that Christ still makes all things new.
After this primary season, we must come together as one. Let us lay aside the sharp words and the old grievances. The real enemy is not the brother across the aisle in our own party. The real enemy is the one who seeks to divide and destroy. Let us therefore stand shoulder to shoulder, having created holy moments through Christ-like mercy, and face what lies ahead united in faith and purpose.
Let the world see in us the same mercy we received. Let them see holy moments born of Christ-like love.
