Exodus 20:16 – “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”
Proverbs 19:5 – “A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will not escape.”
Proverbs 25:18 – “A man who bears false witness against his neighbor is like a war club, or a sword, or a sharp arrow.”
Brothers and sisters, we live in a time when a single lie can destroy a life faster than almost any other weapon. Just this week we watched a political opponent publicly accuse Florida gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds of being under federal investigation for sex trafficking. The Department of Justice immediately answered: the claim is completely false. Donalds is not under investigation. Yet the accusation was launched into the public square right before a primary. That is not politics. That is a spiritual and moral assault.
And this is not only happening in high places. My own son was recently falsely accused. It cost him his job and damaged his reputation. I myself have walked through the fire of false accusations for years. Many of you have too. So today we need to hear what God says about this sin and what it does to a human life.
What Scripture Says:
The ninth commandment is not a suggestion. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” In Deuteronomy 19:16-19 God established a severe safeguard: if someone rises up as a malicious witness and is proven false, the judges are to do to that person exactly what he intended to do to the one he accused. The punishment he sought for the innocent becomes his own. God calls this purging evil from among the people.
Proverbs places a false witness among the seven things the Lord hates (Proverbs 6:16-19). A lying tongue and a false witness who pours out lies sit right beside hands that shed innocent blood and a heart that devises wicked schemes. In God’s eyes, destroying a person’s name with a lie is not a minor offense. It is an abomination.
Jesus Himself was the ultimate victim of false accusation. The religious leaders sought testimony against Him so they could put Him to death, and many bore false witness, yet their stories did not agree (Mark 14:55-56). Even the perfect Son of God was not spared the weapon of the lying tongue.
What a False Accusation Does to a Person’s Life:
A false accusation is not just words. It is a war club, a sword, a sharp arrow. It does real damage:
• It steals reputation that may have taken a lifetime to build.
• It can cost a man his job, his livelihood, and his ability to provide for his family.
• It plants suspicion in the minds of neighbors, employers, churches, and even family members.
• It brings shame, anxiety, sleepless nights, and the crushing weight of having to prove a negative.
• It can fracture marriages and wound children who watch their parent publicly dishonored.
• It can lead the accused into depression, isolation, or bitterness if they do not take refuge in the Lord.
The damage is rarely fully repaired even when the truth comes out. People remember the accusation longer than the clearing. That is why God treats it so seriously.
The Call for Us Today:
First, we must refuse to participate. Do not share, amplify, or entertain unverified accusations—especially those timed for political or personal advantage. Exodus 23:1 warns: “Do not spread false reports. Do not help a guilty person by being a malicious witness.” Silence in the face of a lie is sometimes the most faithful response.
Second, if you have been falsely accused, Jesus speaks directly to you: “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven” (Matthew 5:11-12). Your vindication ultimately rests with God, not with public opinion. Keep a clear conscience. Walk in integrity. Let the Lord fight for you (Exodus 14:14).
Third, we must pray for those who wield this weapon. They are not only harming others—they are storing up judgment for themselves. A false witness will not go unpunished.
Finally, we must be people of truth in a culture drowning in lies. Speak truth. Demand evidence. Protect the innocent. And when we ourselves fall short, repent quickly.
Closing Prayer:
Father, You are a God of truth. You hate the lying tongue and the false witness. Forgive us for every time we have shared what we did not verify or taken pleasure in another’s fall. Comfort those whose names and livelihoods have been attacked by lies—Byron Donalds, my son, myself, and every listener who carries that wound. Restore what the enemy has tried to steal. Give courage to the falsely accused and a holy fear to those who accuse. Make us a people who speak truth in love and refuse the weapon of the false report. In the name of Jesus, the One who was falsely accused yet rose victorious, Amen.
