What I walked away from

I walked away from a 30-year music career to run for Congress in South Texas.

People thought I was crazy. From the jump, the political insiders in Washington counted me out. They said a Tejano singer had no shot at winning in TX-15.

My Republican opponent even mocked me, saying that I only belonged at quinceañeras and not the halls of Congress.

For months, I’ve heard the same story about TX-15. That this seat was out of reach for Democrats. That a Tejano singer couldn’t flip a district Trump won by 18 points.

But across the district, we saw a different story.

In backyards. At quinceañeras. From graduations to church events to neighborhood block parties. Everywhere I went, I heard that South Texans are ready for a leader who shows up and listens.

Now, a new poll backs up what we’ve seen on the ground.

We’ve pulled ahead of Monica De La Cruz in Texas’ most competitive House race. We’re at 48%. She’s at 46%.

But here comes the hard part. We have to hold our lead over the next 3.5 months.

Our campaign has been consistently outraised by Monica De La Cruz. We can build a movement strong enough to win, but I’m counting on grassroots support to compete with my opponent’s multi-million-dollar war chest.
