Our healthcare system is broken.

Sky-high healthcare costs are crushing families. But our leaders in Washington have turned a blind eye. They’re not doing enough to fix this crisis.

I know firsthand what it feels like to be left behind by our healthcare system. When I had to have a hernia fixed, I weighed my options and did the math.

Know what I realized? The care I needed would cost me $80,000 in the United States. In Mexico, I could get the same care at a high-quality hospital for $7,000.

You read that right. In the richest country in the world, I had to cross our southern border to get medical care.

My story isn’t the exception. All across South Texas, I hear the same stories from working people who face an impossible decision: getting the care they need or keeping the lights on.

Our people deserve better than that.

We have to rethink how we provide actually affordable healthcare to more people.

I believe that, like Social Security, Medicare is a promise and a critical safety net that we have to keep and make stronger. We also need real leadership, not more political rhetoric, if we’re ever going to succeed in bringing down the prices of healthcare and prescription drugs.

Here’s what we don’t need: leaders like our current representative, Monica De La Cruz. She took orders from Donald Trump and her party leaders and voted for Trump’s so-called “big beautiful bill,” putting Medicaid and South Texas seniors at risk without any thought for the people who put her in office.

I will never vote against the families of South Texas because my party or anyone else tells me to. Not now. Not ever.
