Sunday morning... stayed in the comfort of my bed an extra hour enjoying a book written by 50 Cent (Curtis Jackson) and Robert Greene—a recommendation from this month’s Transformation Book Club. Reflecting on the insights from the first 25% I’ve read over my first cup of coffee... formal meditation schedule for 10 AM via Zoom... in the comfort of my office chair in front of my keyboard... Life is Good.
I reflect on a Rumi quote: “Being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. Welcome and entertain them all.”
Well, yesterday during a nursing home visit, my 95-year-old mother was delusional and upset over an imagined catastrophe taking place outside her window. Following the coaching advice of hospice staff, I listened, allowed her to describe her fears, and offered no denial to what she was seeing. My wife and I wheeled her up and down the halls, made a brief visit outside, and just listened to her cries for help... a heart-wrenching experience.
Rumi is correct—our human life is a guest house, and being a witness to some arrivals can be more than scary. At the end of the visit, we turned my mom back over to the experienced, professional staff who have dealt with this scene on many occasions.
This horrific image is one that challenges my mission of gratitude... but I must say that I am deeply thankful for the heavenly staff who are treating these new arrivals.
Namaste my friends, may you find gratitude in your day no matter how deep you must dig to find it.
