The 4 Tiny Jewish minorities of 33 A.D.

I am making a huge guestimate here, so this is just a projection. I reached the estimate of approximately 13,400 sect members or 2.68% of a working local Jewish population of 500,000 by treating Josephus’s figures as rough indications of formal membership and then applying explicit geographical assumptions. This leaves a majority of the population in no formal sect, merely observing custom.

Josephus records more than 6,000 Pharisees in Herod’s kingdom (Antiquities 17.42), approximately 4,000 Essenes (Antiquities 18.20), and describes the Sadducees as only “few,” but drawn from society’s highest ranks and supported by the wealthy (Antiquities 18.17; 13.298). Josephus later counts 2,400 Zealots under Eleazar during the siege of Jerusalem (Jewish War 5.250). My model assigned approximately 5,400 Pharisees, 3,600 Essenes, a projected 2,000 Sadducees and the 2,400-member Zealot faction to the local total.

Academics could reasonably accept the broader conclusion, that formal sectarians constituted only a small, low-single-digit ratio of the population while exercising disproportionate influence, but they would regard 13,400 and 2.68% as only guess estimates, since the figures come from very different dates. The Sadducee number is merely my own conjecture. The Zealot figure covers only one wartime faction, and ancient Palestine population estimates vary considerably.
