This weekend I’m camping with my daughter and fellow dads a part of Adventure Guides. It’s a blast getting outside and having adventures with my kids.
It’s a great week for fans of entertainment. We have a new PT Anderson movie, a new Geese record, and the new Sterlin Harjo show The Lowdown is off to a great start. And I’m seeing Pavement tonight (bucket list live show).

ComiClub Recommends: Asterios Polyp
An astonishing showcase of the comic book medium by master cartoonist & illustrator David Mazzucchelli. It’s an exploration of the titular character Asterios Polyp’s life after a devastating low point where his apartment goes up in flames after getting struck by lightning. He reexamines his erudite life and considers his role in his marriage ending.
Mazzucchelli is an old-school draftsmen who pushes the medium with creative use of panel layouts, color, and storytelling. It has some of the best hand-drawn lettering I’ve ever seen.
Highly recommended if you want to see what the medium of comics is capable of.

Hollow Knight: Silksong is the best game I’ve played this year
A fallen world. A lone adventurer. Lots of bugs.
Silksong is the follow up to Hollow Knight, one of my top games of all time.
It’s a multiple genre mashup:
2D Platformer - Yes this is an old school 2-dimensional game.
Metroidvania - A subgenre where you collect new abilities (double jump, cling grip, etc.) to reach new areas you double back to. Popularized by the Metroid and Castlevania series.
Soulslike - A subgenre where you gain important level up currency by defeating enemies, but potentially lose everything if you die. Oh and enemies reset everytime you rest. Popularized by Dark Souls.
The game uses beautiful hand-drawn animation and the sweeping score highlights the intensity and chill moments of the game.
The game is difficult to the point of being punishing on the player. You don’t just advance by playing, you actually have to increase your skills to get good enough to clear a boss or area.
Not for the feint of heart but highly recommended.

Inject Shelley Duvall’s version of “He Needs Me” into my veins. This movie puts you into the head of a troubled mind. And when the fog clears, thanks to a harmonium and a pretty girl, the payoff is so sweet.Light of the World - ★★★½
Saw this in theaters with a church group kids and the death of Christ devastated these children. It’s a fantastic retelling of the Christ story.Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle - ★★½
Absolutely astonishing animation and fight choreography. Absolutely horrendous pacing that makes the film a slog. They tell a 30-minute long backstory of a character after he dies!?!? I’m already done caring about this dude, he’s dead.Troy - ★★★
The ugliest war epic with the most beautiful boy. The British and Irish actors put the Americans to shame. Still, nothing beats putting tons of bodies in front of a camera with huge constructed sets. Always magical.
What to [watch] this weekend: One Battle After Another
One of our best working directors looks to be making a full tilt movie. I don’t know what else to call it. The trailers are marketing the action pretty heavily but I’m expecting a lot of comedy from Leo. So stoked to see this film!
