The recent heat waves here in the US and around the world have turned my thoughts even more to water and watering.
First, as a gardener, I know we must pay more attention for the water needs of our plants, and this often brings our thoughts to the soil. Soil can sometimes resist water, and we might not notice this is happening, until we are in the midst of a heat wave. It’s always a good idea to check out the soil’s moisture down in the plants root zones to be sure the water is getting down to where it needs to be. More on this here.
Another thing you might notice as you water, if you pay attention, is that the surface particles of your soil move around as you water. This isn’t the best sign, but it isn’t a catastrophe either. It maybe you need to adjust the volume or pressure of the water or choose a softer spray. But it can also be a sign that your soil lacks organic matter, that the particles are too uniform in size, or that the soil is very low in beneficial soil microorganisms…
