I had slipped up on my garlic habit for a few weeks. But then I woke up with my asthma stirring around, which it rarely does, and feeling like I might be coming down with something. So, garlic became part of my breakfast that morning.

I make a sort of weird open-faced breakfast sandwich almost every morning, with organic toast, organic no-sugar fruit spread, non-fat grass-fed plain Greek yogurt, and organic grated cheese. I minced a clove of raw garlic and added it right on top of the fruit spread, and I started feeling better in a few hours. Then I made a little fruit salad for lunch, and some garlic went in it as well. I know this sounds weird too, but if you like garlic, it tastes better than you might imagine. Later I used some homemade broth to make, guess what? Garlicy chicken soup! I was fit as a fiddle, fast.

Meanwhile, getting this post organized jogged my memory about the benefits of including garlic in the garden and in food. If you have slipped out of your own garlic habit, I hope this post jogs your memory as well. And if you haven’t gotten the habit yet, you will find good reasons to grow and eat garlic below.

This post is built on Substack notes. ‘Notes’ are what the shorter, more informal Substack posts are called. Notes never have paywalls and they never have advertising. And they often have more information than at first meets the eye. To access the full notes, just click the date in the right-hand corner and they will open in a new browser window. (You can comment on or share any of the individual notes, if you like, or you can do the same for this entire post when you get to the end.)
