Furious (Hulu) New series: Furious could finally be the hit for Emmy Rossum, the former Shameless star who many—including, vocally and often, me—believed would be that show’s first breakout solo star (it instead turned out to be Jeremy Allen White of The Bear). Furious is a loose adaptation of the 1987 movie Black Widow, with Rossum playing Alice Black, a rookie FBI agent on the trail of a sadistic female serial killer. The series’ DNA recalls the blurred moral lines of Killing Eve and Monster (not a bad problem to have), but it doesn’t seem built for multiple seasons (then again, Criminal Minds is nearing 20, so …). Supergirl (VOD rent/buy) Movie streaming premiere: Just one month after its theatrical release, Supergirl will be available to rent at home (it’ll also be on HBO Max by fall—the DC flick’s box office performance suggests you’re not in a hurry to see it, anyway). What went wrong for Supergirl? Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel proved that women can successfully headline a superhero movie, but Supergirl seemed doomed even before the beginning, from backlash against the lead casting of Millie Alcock (“It should have been Sydney Sweeney!” is some of the dumbest/funniest Reddit shit ever) to the supposed slapdash feel of the final product (I’ll refer you to the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer for a real taste of narrative nonsense). The Ark (Syfy) Season 3 premiere: As I wrote in the July edition of my syndicated True TV column, The Ark is the sole remaining Syfy original still standing on the once-prolific sci-fi cable network—it’s not much, but it’s literally all we have. At the end of Season 2, the once-adrift crew of the interplanetary colony ship Ark 1 had finally found a livable planet to call Homebase 1, while some decided to keep exploring the galaxy and answer a mysterious distress call (which always ends well, especially in space). It’s cool to see the show move beyond its initial Lost in Space setup, but The Ark might possibly become too ambitious for its own good (and budget). The Ark S3 trailer
The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare (Netflix) New docuseries: The 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students in Moscow, Idaho has already generated One Night in Idaho: The College Murders, The Idaho Student Murders, and Cybersleuth: The Idaho Murders—do we really need another docuseries about it? Statistically, yes: None of those were on Netflix, so the three-part The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare will be the only one most actually see (and it has Nightmare in the title, which always seals the deal for these kinds of docs). Lollapalooza Livestream (Hulu, Disney+) Live event, daily start time 12:45 pm PT/3:45 pm ET: Lollapalooza 2026 kicks off with first-day headliners Lorde and John Summit, preceded by Wet Leg, Blood Orange, 5 Seconds of Summer, Viagra Boys, Ecca Vandal, and over 30 more artists on the undercard, live from Chicago. Friday’s headliners are Charli XCX and Smashing Pumpkins, Saturday’s are Olivia Jean and Jennie, and Sunday closes out with Tate McRae and The XX. Adults (FXX, Hulu) Special: Adults, the kinda-hit comedy of summer 2025, isn’t back just yet: Season 2 drops in its entirety August 27 on Hulu, and will air weekly on FXX through September. So what’s “Marathon Day,” a month-early, single-episode teaser? It’s the story of how the Gen Z NYC gang (Amita Rao, Lucy Freyer, Malik Elassel, and Owen Thiele) first met Paul Baker (Jack Innanen). The 20-something audience Adults in aiming for probably isn’t going to watch it on FXX, or maybe not even Hulu, but is there anything here for the olds? Me, I liked, and laughed at, Season 1 with more frequency as episodes flew by, more so than Hulu’s similarly targeted Not Suitable for Work. We’ll revisit Adults next month. Adults teaser
Batman: Caped Crusader (Prime Video) Season 2 premiere: Purchased at a DC/Warner Bros. fire sale a couple of years ago, this Dark Knight saga takes place in the 1940s, when Batman (voiced by Hamish Linklater) was new to Gotham and the police didn’t know if this masked crimefighter was an ally, a loose-cannon psycho, or both (a little of this, a little of that). Caped Crusader’s animation is clean and straight-forward, not far removed from that of the classic Batman: The Animated Series (same producer, Bruce Timm), and the period setting works as well here as it did for Prime Video’s other classic superhero series, Spider-Noir. SOULM8TE (VOD rent/buy) Movie premiere: You might remember M3GAN, the 2023 hit about an android kiddie doll that comes to sentient, murderous life, and maybe even M3GAN 2.0, the 2025 sequel. SOULM8TE is the forgotten follow-up with little in common with the previous two except for the robotic combo of a number and all-caps letters. Also, it’s an R-rated erotic thriller (all together now: ick) about an adult ‘droid (played by Lily Sullivan) purchased as a replacement for the dead wife of a grieving man (David Rysdahl). Lioness (Paramount+) Season 3 premiere: Back in 2023, this outlier in Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ universe had to be sneaked in under the title Special Ops: Lioness just to trick men into watching a show led by women—here we are three years later, so it worked. Lioness is based on a real-life CIA program that trains female recruits for undercover operations, and features a typically Sheridan-solid cast that includes lead Zoe Saldaña, Morgan Freeman, and Nicole Kidman (she’s everywhere). As hard-boiled get-your-war-on action series go, Lioness falls between the Showtime hit Homeland and the Cinemax obscurity Strike Back: imperfect, but good enough to let you temporarily forget that the U.S. military is currently run by a vodka-marinated assclown from Fox News weekends.
