Futurama (Hulu) Season 14 premiere: Futurama has been around since 1999, canceled twice by two different networks, and has only accrued 13 previous seasons despite premiering in 1999—have I mentioned that Futurama has existed since 1999? It’ll still be on when we’re all heads in jars, count on it. This season’s wacky plot points include lab-grown meats (still a thing in the 31st Century), pirates (same), and “sexy scams” (evergreen, with or without humans). Get ready to party with Fry, Leela, and Bender like it’s … you know. Evil Dead Burn (VOD rent/buy) Movie streaming premiere: The sixth movie in the Evil Dead series proves that no one has learned any lessons about messing with the Necronomicon since 1981. The time around, the Book of the Dead unleashes the Deadite curse upon a grieving widow’s (Souheila Yacoub) in-laws who, frankly, were already dicks in the first place. Evil Dead Burn builds on the visceral strengths of the previous Evil Dead Rise (2023) with its wooded, isolated setting, more-more-gore-gore attitude, and all the fire the title implies—good luck topping it with the next installment, Evil Dead Wrath (projected for 2028). Betrayal (Hulu) Season 4 premiere: The latest season of the love-gone-all-the-way-wrong docuseries covers the case of Colorado Springs cop and sex addict Joel Kern, who abused his badge to engage in numerous kinky on-the-job affairs with women who weren’t his unsuspecting wife. Needless to say, the three-episode Betrayal: Dirty Secrets is based on a true-crime podcast and enhanced with all the sensationalized reenactments you’ve come to know and demand from these shows—the Internal Affairs footage is just a bonus. The Shards (FX, Hulu) New series: Producer/director/writer Ryan Murphy takes on the autobiographical-ish Bret Easton Ellis novel The Shards, which is a volatile recipe for overindulgence and decadence—since it’s set in the ’80s, perfect. The Shards follows a mysterious teen (Homer Gere, the 26-year-old son of Richard), whose arrival at an elite Los Angeles prep school in 1981 neatly coincides with a string of murders across the city. The flashy series also stars Graham Campbell, Wes Bentley, Evan Rachel Wood, Hayes Warner, Jordan Roth, Kaia Gerber (daughter of Cindy Crawford—this show is nepo-tastic), and the impossibly-named Igby Rigney as a young Bret Easton Ellis. Ted Lasso (Apple TV) Season 4 premiere: We all thought we’d seen the last of Ted Lasso when Season 3 ended in 2023, but here we are with a belated fourth season that finds former American football coach Ted (Jason Sudeikis) once again out of his element—this time working with a women’s soccer team in Britain. Ted regs Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, and Jeremy Swift return alongside Sudeikis, but Phil Dunster (who played Jamie Tartt) is occupied playing a different dirtbag on HBO’s Rooster. How to Catch a Dirtbag (Discovery) New reality series: Speaking of dirtbags, how great a title is How to Catch a Dirtbag? Could be any reality show. This one is based on the crowd-sourced investigations of beardy YouTuber Tizzy Ent, who uses his platform to expose shitty people doing shitty things (which, again, sums up every reality series). Monsters of God (HBO, HBO Max) New docuseries: Filmmaker Eric Goode explores the underworld of exotic animal smuggling, covering outlaw traffickers, colorful collectors, and the law agents on their trail. If you thought the characters of HBO’s It’s Florida, Man were out there, just wait until you get a load of the all-too-real critter enthusiasts on Monsters of God: “Bro, smuggle some fuckin’ turtles, and then you’ll feel the rush,” says one interviewee when asked about his motivations—can’t argue with that, bro. Escape From Alcatraz (Discovery) New docuseries: The infamous 1962 Alcatraz prison break is revisited by true-crime podcasters, who are apparently the only kind of investigators working on anything these days. Sidebar: Escape From Alcatraz has reminded me that our convicted felon president still wants to reopen Alcatraz as an active prison, which would somewhat impede the island’s current moneymaking status as a tourist attraction. But hey, it would only take $152 million in the first year to retrofit Alcatraz as a prison and, eventually, $2 billion to finish the job. As long as he’s the first new inmate, let’s do it.

Anna Pigeon (USA) New series: A fresh original drama on USA? That hasn’t happened since 2020’s Briarpatch (more recent series Resident Alien and Chucky don’t count, as they were shared property with Syfy). A debilitating loss has driven Anna Pigeon (Tracy Spiridakos, Chicago P.D.) out of the city and into a remote park ranger job, trying to escape her demons while also solving crimes on national park grounds. Aside from gorgeous scenery, Anna Pigeon (based on Nevada Barr’s novel series of the same name) also stars Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica), Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna Earp), Paulina Alexis (Reservation Dogs), and Kim Coates (American Primeval, Sons of Anarchy). Ricky Gervais’ Alley Cats (Netflix) New animated series: It was just called Alley Cats until Netflix figured out that putting Ricky Gervais’ name in the title might bump his new cartoon series up in the algorithm. Alley Cats (featuring the voices of Gervais and Cunk on Earth’s Diane Morgan, among others) is about a group of British felines who hang out together and cause trouble, never mind the fact that cats don’t run in packs—if you accept talking animals, what’s one more suspension of disbelief?
