Lately, I've been reflecting on the divine energy that connects us all. For many years, I lost touch with my personal faith. But now, as I embark on a journey to redefine what faith and divine energy truly mean, I feel the Universe communicating with me in subtle yet undeniable ways. My eyes, ears, and heart are open again. I want to share a story from my past that resonates deeply within me as an example of divine energy in its purest form. It was a moment that revealed the profound connection between humanity and a higher power.

Many years ago, when I was a new nurse in the hospital, I took over the care of a man sent to our unit from the Emergency Department. Upon assessment, it became immediately apparent that this man was actively dying. This wasn’t just the late stages of cancer but the final hours of his life. His wife and his wife’s family were at his bedside. They knew the end of his life was imminent. Their grief was palpable, but so was their devotion to this man. He would be surrounded by family as he took his last breaths. The patient could not be healed, but our staff did their best to make him comfortable in this last stage of life.

The patient was caucasian, and his wife told me she was from Korea. Her accent was thick, her words wavering with pain but easily understandable. I could see how much she loved him, aching at the thought of losing him. My heart ached for her, having lost my beloved stepfather to cancer a year earlier. Cancer takes so much from those battling the disease and the loved ones who courageously battle alongside them. She asked if she could invite members from their church to come sit with him in the hospital room. We had offered our own chaplain, which she had politely declined. I told her to invite whoever would give them support during this time.

Within an hour, five gentlemen dressed as priests showed up. Unlike the chaplain at the hospital, these men wore robes that reminded me of monks. I did not speak to them directly but provided chairs so they could all sit down. I gave them time to acclimate as I left the room to chart. I sensed their need for privacy, so I checked on the patient regularly with minimal imposition.

I left the dying patient’s room for about ten minutes. When I returned to check on the patient and his family members, I knocked, but no one answered. I could hear chanting coming from inside the room. So I opened the door slowly. As the door opened, I could feel an enormous amount of heat pour out, unlike anything I’d ever felt. This was not the kind of heat that a hospital heater provides. It was alive. The air was thick with energy, and as I stepped in, I could almost see the divine light surrounding these people, filling every corner of the room. They held hands and chanted, swaying in time with the rhythm.

I couldn’t understand the words, but I felt them reverberating in my soul. It didn’t matter that I could not understand the language - any human being could have grasped the power of the chants. I was overcome by a sense of peace, knowing that despite the loss, this man was being enveloped in light. This was no ordinary moment. It was a glimpse into something beyond our understanding. The power and energy I felt in that room came from a higher power. I had never seen or felt anything like this before. My eyes filled with tears, but I was not sad. I was grateful to be even the smallest part of my patient’s journey and privy to the power surrounding him. There was great comfort in knowing that although this man would leave the earthly realm, he was being guided somewhere else - somewhere safe and full of light.

The patient passed away an hour later. But I do not believe he was afraid. His death was peaceful. He passed away comfortably, surrounded by the people who loved him. His family mourned him, but I also believe they were at peace. I cannot imagine a better way to begin the journey to the realm that waits for us when we leave our earthly bodies. I do not think the energy I felt in that hospital room was anything short of a miracle.

Reflecting on that experience, I know it was not just a one-time miracle. I don’t think experiencing divine energy requires a room full of people chanting, although I’m sure that’s an amazing way to conjure this feeling. As I have opened my heart and soul to my higher power, I find proof of divine energy every day - in my conversations with my children and husband and in the music I listen to. I see divinity in the sunshine, the blooming flowers, and the rain that makes all this possible. I believe we are all connected to this higher energy; through faith, we can tap into it, bring it into our daily lives, and share it with others. The more I keep my heart open, the more I find myself being guided, and I know that by doing so, I am part of something greater than myself. I am receiving and giving by sharing the light I have found, hoping it will help others find their own.
