Greetings, friends! Happy April and official spring! Even living in Los Angeles, where the weather is great most of the time, people celebrate the start of this new season. Last Wednesday, my husband and I decided to throw a “Spring Garden Party” on Friday, and nearly 50 people showed up! I think we’re all just looking for joyful moments amongst the chaos. I made this Spicy Ricotta Dip with Hot Honey, and we spun this Numero Group Spring/Summer playlist that just hit the spot. On Sunday, I went to the beach with a dear friend, and we had our first ocean swim of the year. We got completely rocked by the waves, and the water was frigid, but it felt exhilarating and much-needed. Easter dinner consisted of street tacos from Angel’s Tijuana Tacos. I’m fairly certain we didn’t know what tacos should taste like before moving to California. The flavor is out of this world.
I’ve talked a lot over the years about how much I respect and love the art of sign-painting, and my phone camera roll can back this up! I don’t know why our brains work the way they do, but I don’t think it ever occurred to me that I could also learn to paint signs! I think it’s because I view sign painters as design gods, and it felt too out of reach.
I’m excited to share that I’m starting an 8-week sign painting course this week! It will be once a week, for a total of 64 hours of in-class teaching. I’m thrilled to learn the craft and sort through how I can bring it into my digital design practice.
This is a top-secret project for now, but I’ve been working on a very special guide to a place that I think many of us love. If you want to see the first hint of it, make sure to follow Herb Lester!
I’ve also been writing and designing my keynote speech for Crop Creative Conference, which is coming up at the end of the month. I’ll be speaking for 45 minutes on the power of personal work. I keep joking that I don’t think I’ve ever talked nonstop for 45 minutes, except in my design workshop, so please wish me luck!
Later this month, I’ll have a special post in partnership with the Letterform Archive. I’m such a fan of everything they do, from their online workshops and talks to their archives of inspiring ephemera. For example, here are some of their collections. SWOON.
Next week, I’ll be releasing my first design advice column, “Dear Designer”, where I’ll answer your burning design questions. So many great questions have been submitted, like “How can I land a book cover project at Penguin Random House?” and “How do I land a design internship with only projects from class in my portfolio?” This is a special series for paid subscribers, and I’d love to have you join in the conversations!
I’ve loved seeing what you’re all doing with my typefaces, Draft Paper, and Parts List! One of the prettiest ways I’ve seen Draft Paper in use has been on Vicky D’Incecco’s custom shoes shop site. Her shoes are so dreamy. I’ve had people ask if my fonts are web-friendly. And apparently they are! How so? I have no idea.

Our garden has been in full swing these days, which means there’s a lot to share! A salad bouquet™ is my new favorite thing to give to friends. New house? Salad bouquet. Hard day? Salad bouquet!
