Lindsey Graham’s death was shocking. And I don’t mean this without respect…it was also liberating.
His absence has rattled the GOP in South Carolina and nationally, opened a path for Dr. Annie Andrews, and exposed a crack in a political structure that had come to seem permanent.
That is what the storming of the Bastille meant. The fortress was more than a prison. It was a symbol of royal power and an old order built to protect the French aristocracy while ordinary people carried the tax burden, struggled to afford bread, and remained shut out of meaningful power.
When the Bastille fell, the French people discovered that the walls surrounding entrenched authority were not sacred—and they were not indestructible.
Our oligarchs possess even more power. The French aristocracy controlled land, wealth, and government. Today’s oligarchs increasingly control the systems through which we receive information, speak to one another, organize politically, and understand reality itself.
The wall has cracked. Now we move through it.
