The Fear Men Rarely Talk About: Prostate Cancer Recurrence

There is something nobody really tells men about prostate cancer.

Even after treatment…
Even after the surgery…
Even after the PSA drops…

the fear often never fully leaves.

Because every follow-up appointment carries the same silent question: What if it comes back?

The American Cancer Society states that prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis among men in the United States, accounting for 30% of male cancers in 2025. It is also the second-leading cause of cancer death among American men, behind lung cancer. And while many cases are successfully managed, a significant percentage of patients will eventually face metastatic disease.

But emotionally, statistics almost stop mattering. Because once you have heard the word “cancer,” you live with the understanding that recurrence is possible. And that changes people.

One of the most important shifts happening in oncology today is the growing realization that cancer recurrence may not simply be “bad luck.”

Researchers increasingly believe that a small population of highly resistant cells — known as cancer stem cells — may survive treatment and later regenerate tumors.

These cells can remain dormant. Hidden. Resistant.

And they may help explain why some cancers return years after apparently successful treatment

For me, this field of research feels both scientifically fascinating and deeply personal.

Because in many ways, it echoes ideas my father, Dr. Mirko Beljanski, explored decades ago: the importance of looking beyond the visible tumor, understanding the biological terrain of disease, and investigating compounds capable of acting selectively on cancerous cells while sparing healthy ones.

What many people do not realize is that research involving Pao pereira and Rauwolfia vomitoria in prostate cancer, funded by The Beljanski Foundation, has already produced important findings. These extracts used for this research have been generously provided by Maison Beljanski.

Studies conducted at Columbia University and Nanjing University demonstrated several biological activities highly relevant to prostate cancer progression. Researchers observed anti-inflammatory effects, including regulation of NF-kB — a pathway strongly associated with chronic inflammation and cancer progression. Other studies demonstrated inhibition of 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme deeply involved in prostate biology and hormone-related pathways. Even more compelling to me was the observation of selective apoptosis in cancerous prostate cells.

In simple terms: the extracts appeared capable of helping trigger the death of malignant cells while sparing healthy ones.

And perhaps most importantly, researchers also observed activity on hormone-resistant prostate cancer cells — one of the most difficult challenges in advanced prostate cancer care.

At the time, these findings already felt important.

Today, in light of the breakthrough preliminary findings obtained in breast cancer stem cells research funded by The Beljanski Foundation, they feel even more significant. Because we are now beginning to ask a larger question: Could these compounds also influence the stem-cell-driven mechanisms behind recurrence and metastasis?

The preliminary breast cancer stem cells results to be presented at the upcoming Beljanski Integrative Cancer Conference are simply extraordinary.

In preclinical models, animals receiving the botanical combinations did not develop metastases, while many untreated animals did. Those findings are still undergoing final biochemical analysis before publication. But they opened the door to something much larger.

A new direction.

A new possibility.

And perhaps a new frontier in integrative oncology.

That is why The Beljanski Foundation is now calling for support to help advance the next phase of research into prostate cancer stem cells.

Because for millions of men living with prostate cancer, recurrence is not an abstract scientific concept.

It is a daily psychological reality.

This June, at the 2026 Beljanski Integrative Cancer Conference in San Diego, researchers will present the latest findings from the breast cancer stem cell program and discuss the future direction of prostate cancer stem cell research.

For me, this conference is not simply an event. It is a gathering of people who believe science should continue asking difficult questions.

Patients. Researchers. Physicians. Survivors. Families. People who understand that innovation often begins at the edge of what conventional thinking is willing to explore.
