Living After Cancer: The Conversation We Need to Have About Recurrence

For many people, the happiest day of their cancer journey is the day they hear the words: “There is no evidence of disease.”

It is a moment of relief. A moment of gratitude. A moment worth celebrating.

And yet, for many, it is also the beginning of a new chapter—one that is rarely discussed.

As the founder of The Beljanski Foundation, I have spoken with thousands of people affected by cancer over the years. Patients, caregivers, physicians, researchers, and families. One theme comes up again and again. The fear that cancer may come back.

This fear of cancer recurrence is rarely visible from the outside. Friends and family see recovery. Doctors see successful treatment. Life gradually returns to normal.

But many people living after cancer carry a quiet question with them:

What can I do to stay healthy and reduce my risk of recurrence?

That question deserves more attention than it receives.

The good news is that more people are surviving cancer than ever before. Advances in screening, diagnosis, surgery, radiation, and systemic therapies have transformed outcomes for millions of patients worldwide.

This progress is worth celebrating.

Yet recurrence remains one of the greatest challenges in oncology.

For many cancers, the disease that returns months or years later is often more difficult to treat than the original tumor. Metastatic disease remains responsible for the overwhelming majority of cancer-related deaths. Despite remarkable advances, researchers continue to search for answers that could help explain why cancer sometimes returns even after apparently successful treatment.

Part of the answer lies in the fact that cancer is not a single disease. Even within the same tumor, different populations of cells can behave in very different ways. While many treatments are effective at shrinking tumors and eliminating the majority of cancer cells, some cells may prove far more difficult to eradicate.

For decades, cancer research focused primarily on destroying rapidly dividing cancer cells. Yet, recurrence and metastasis continue to challenge patients and physicians alike.

This reality has led researchers to ask an important question:

What if some cancer cells possess unique properties that allow them to survive treatment, remain dormant for months or even years, and later reignite the disease?

This question has given rise to one of the most exciting areas of cancer research today: the study of cancer stem cells.

Cancer stem cells are a small population of cells found within many tumors. Researchers believe these cells may play a critical role in treatment resistance, recurrence, and metastasis. Unlike most cancer cells, cancer stem cells appear capable of self-renewal and of generating new tumor cells long after the original tumor has been treated.

If this hypothesis continues to be confirmed, it could fundamentally change how we think about cancer treatment.

Rather than focusing solely on reducing the size of a tumor, future therapies may increasingly seek to target the cells that enable cancer to return. This is why cancer stem cell research has attracted growing attention from leading cancer centers around the world.

At The Beljanski Foundation, we believe this field represents one of the most promising frontiers in oncology. Our commitment to cancer stem cell research is a natural extension of the vision pioneered by my father, Dr. Mirko Beljanski.

Long before environmental medicine became widely recognized, he challenged conventional thinking by investigating the role of environmental toxins in DNA damage and by studying natural compounds capable of acting selectively against cancer cells while sparing healthy ones.

Today, the Foundation continues that spirit of scientific curiosity and innovation.

In collaboration with researchers at the Kansas University Medical Center, we have supported groundbreaking studies exploring the effects of Pao pereira and Rauwolfia vomitoria on cancer stem cells. Recent findings in breast cancer models have provided encouraging evidence that these natural extracts may affect cancer stem cell populations while demonstrating remarkable selectivity toward cancer cells.

These findings will be presented and discussed during the 2026 Beljanski Integrative Cancer Conference in San Diego later this month, where researchers, clinicians, and patient advocates will gather to explore some of the most promising developments in integrative oncology. The results have opened exciting new avenues for research

Now, we are preparing to expand this work into additional areas, including prostate cancer stem cells—an area of urgent need for the millions of men diagnosed each year and the many more who continue to live with the fear of progression and recurrence.

We do not claim to have all the answers. Science advances one study at a time. But every major breakthrough begins with a question that others were not yet asking. Cancer stem cell research may prove to be one of those questions.

On this National Cancer Survivors Day, let us celebrate every person who has faced cancer with courage.

Let us celebrate the victories.

But let us also commit ourselves to supporting the research that may one day make recurrence far less common than it is today.

Because living after cancer should not mean living in fear.

It should mean living fully.

And that future is worth building together.
