The Pricing Problem Every Creator Faces

One of the most awkward questions in the creator and freelance world is also one of the most common - What are your charges?

For many Indian creators, influencers, photographers, designers and freelancers, this question creates instant confusion. Should you quote ₹5,000? ₹25,000? ₹1 lakh? or more. What if the brand says no? What if you later realise you charged too little?

This is the pricing problem every creator faces.

There is no universal price sheet or rate card and that’s exactly why pricing feels so difficult.

Your price should depend on more than follower count. A collaboration can involve content creation, access to your audience, usage rights, exclusivity, revisions, travel, production costs and even the right for a brand to use your face in advertisements. These are different kinds of value and they should not automatically be bundled into one low fee.

A better way to think about pricing is to start with your base creation fee and then build on it depending on the scope of the campaign.

For example, creating one Instagram Reel for your own page is one deliverable. Allowing the brand to run that Reel as a paid advertisement for six months is another. Agreeing not to work with competing brands is another. Providing raw footage is another.

The biggest mistake many creators make is sending the same rate card to every brand. A local café, a growing Indian startup, mid-size tech company and a multinational company may ask for a similar-looking Reel, but the commercial value and usage of that content can be very different.

Instead of treating your rate card as a fixed menu, treat it as a starting point for a conversation.

Before sharing a quote, ask:

What are the deliverables?

Where will the content be used?

Will there be paid advertising?

How long are the usage rights required?

Is there an exclusivity period?

What is the timeline?

Then quote based on the complete scope.

And remember, negotiation does not always mean reducing your price. If a client has a smaller budget, you can reduce the number of deliverables, shorten the usage period or remove exclusivity instead.

A good rate card gives you structure. A good pricing strategy gives you flexibility.

The goal is not to charge the highest possible amount for every collaboration. It is to understand the value you are providing, price it clearly and build relationships where both the creator and the brand feel the partnership makes business sense.

Creator Pricing Checklist

Before you send your next quote, check:

  • Deliverables: Reel, Story, Post, Short, UGC video or a complete package?

  • Creative effort: Who handles the concept, script, shoot and edit?

  • Production costs: Travel, location, props, equipment, makeup or additional crew?

  • Publishing: Will it be posted on your page, the brand’s page or both?

  • Usage rights: Where can the brand use your content and for how long?

  • Paid ads: Will your content or likeness be used in advertising?

  • Exclusivity: Are you restricted from working with competing brands? For how long?

  • Revisions: How many rounds of changes are included?

  • Raw footage: Does the brand want unedited files or extra content?

  • Timeline: Is it a normal deadline or an urgent turnaround?

  • Payment terms: Advance amount, payment date, invoice requirements and applicable taxes?

  • Cancellation terms: What happens if the campaign is cancelled after work has started?

Simple rule:

Don’t quote until you know exactly what you’re creating, where it will be used and for how long.
