Becky Helms · My Artist Friend with Becky Helms

This week, Andy and I got the desktop for my wall-to-wall desk cut and built! We bought a circular saw! And a Kreg jig! They worked like a dream! The rest of the week was spent finishing up painting, putting it all together and completely forgetting that I put out a newsletter on Fridays 🙃

Anyway! We’re here now!

All of my office/studio stuff has been living in the basement since we moved (almost three years ago) and I can’t tell you how good it feels to unearth pieces of myself after so long. Trinkets I’ve collected and products I dreamed up now surround the space and I feel more myself than I have in a long time.

Also, it’s all pink 😬

  1. My new journal obsession (Traveler’s Journals, Hobonichi, handmade, all of it!)

  2. Actually being able to fit my fabric stash in my office storage. A miracle!

  3. The fact that there’s thunder and rain outside as I write this.

Again, I’ve been neglecting everything in order to get my office done! We have guests coming soon, so it’s been priority #1!

But here are some fun things from the archive in case you missed them:

First photo: a pink dress with clear plastic pockets holding trinkets all over it. Second photo: a quilted tote and key chain that look like a cottage and house. • Sam’s Whurld- This isn’t a shop, but an IG profile featuring an amazing DIY! This post has a full step-by-step tutorial of how to make a trinket dress. Incredible.

  • Square Stories - Another DIY, but this is a pattern for a cottage tote and little house purse keychain to go with it! So cute and cozy.

First photo: a small photo frame made of blue ceramics in an organic shape. Second photo: a notepad with a cozy house as the space to write. First photo: a small photo frame made of blue ceramics in an organic shape. Second photo: a notepad with a cozy house as the space to write.
  • The Creative Traveler - This shop has a drop at the end of the month and I just think this frame is so pretty. They have a bunch of similar designs for pre-order and I think they’d be great on an eclectic gallery wall.

  • Paperaica Shop - Everything in this shop is so cozy. This little note pad is precious!

Photo One: two light blue vases with cloud details. Second photo: a ring made from a ceramic plate. Photo One: two light blue vases with cloud details. Second photo: a ring made from a ceramic plate.
  • Pot Champ - This shop is sold out, but I had to show you! Please follow her on Instagram because her work is so cute!

  • Oaker and Elm - I love how this artist uses old plates to make rings!

The 100 Day Project is still pluggin’ along! I really want to make more movie quote necklaces. Also, I’ve not had time to go to the bead shop recently and my collection is starting to dwindle!

I found my enamel pin collection!! And the collection I kept of all the pins I designed over the years, too! I haven’t put them up yet, but it's so nice to have all my little pieces of art close at hand. Unpacking was like the best Christmas ever lol.

Rachel’s tutorial for painting IKEA furniture was so good! I spent last weekend finishing up the painting and, as you can see, started organizing everything in my very pink office! Half IKEA, half custom made, I think my little office turned out really nice! I’ll have proper photos when everything is is truly set up. The only shelf that’s done done is the top right with my Barbies and Polly Pockets. Everything else is needs attention!

But, I wanted to show you a real process photo. The mess is so real and lasts for so long and no one has a magazine-ready home all the time. Also, I just realized I need to put my sewing machine up there and don’t have an actual office chair yet. We’re getting there!

Also, don’t forget about Snart if you’re looking for some crafty ideas!

  • Chain Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah (audiobook via Libby) - This book has been my whole week. I’m about two hours from the end and I’m so afraid for Thurwar and Staxxx (the main characters). This is a near-future dystopian story about the American prison system turning into a Gladiator-esque spectacle. It’s so beautifully written and so heartbreakingly close to reality. Please read this book!!

  • A Prayer for the Crown Shy by Becky Chambers (hardcover) - This novella picks up right after A Psalm for the Wild Built (which ended in such a heart-warming way!) and I’m so excited to see where these characters go next. Also, when looking for the link to this book, I found out she’s got a new book coming out in October! EEP!!

*Book links are affiliates where I get a small portion of the sale and it helps to support The Fox and the Feather, my favorite woman-owned, indie bookshop near me!

  • Beans in the window, showing off his namesake. He really plays fast and loose with those toe beans.

  • And we had a morning visitor!!! Look how tubby!!! Look at it’s perfect, floofy tail!!! I love raccoons and their little people hands. I just want to hug them.

I won’t drone on any more about the week, thank you for letting me share the messy progress of my office! I’ll do a proper post when everything is truly done and I actually have a chair lol.

Have a fantastic weekend, cutie!

K, love you, byeeee!

♡ Becky
