Perseverance: Among My Top Three Ingredients For Seeing Desired Outcomes

This article is not about what success means, because as we know, it means different things to different people.

We also know that everyone has a ‘formula’ for success. Some even have a formula for winning the lottery that (apparently) has randomly selected numbers, and for winning (the British game show) Deal or No Deal. I sometimes wish they would share their insights with the rest of us 😊

When I refer to desired outcomes, I mean outcomes of the sort over which we have control – for example, a project we are working on, not whether people create a stampede to buy a product over which we have little control.

For me, the primary ingredient for seeing the first type of outcome is perseverance.

The second ingredient is having a strong reason for wishing to have this outcome, i.e., a strong “why”.

And the third ingredient is a can-do attitude coupled with high but contained positive energy.

If you don’t have a compelling reason for doing something, whatever the reason is, chances are you will either abandon the whole project or drag your heels trying to complete it.

If you don’t have a can-do attitude and instead lack ambition, lack focus, lack desire, operate in a perpetual mental fog, and are like a slug, chances are you will make little progress.

If you do not persevere until the conclusion of the project, your outcome will not be what you wanted.

Perseverance requires of us to keep showing up, to keep doing the difficult things, to keep on, day in, day out, through the challenges, through the frustrations.

Perseverance requires of us to find solutions to big problems and small problems, preferably in the most efficient, sensible, logical way to conserve our energy and prevent us from going round in circles and making no progress.

Perseverance requires of us to make sacrifices – perhaps we will have to curtail our social lives for a while. Perhaps we will have to hold off spending money on something because we need to spend money on our business.

Perseverance is about keeping our “why” firmly in sight and not only focusing on the outcome, but realizing that there is much joy and fulfilment in the journey towards the outcome. This comes from having a particular kind of mindset, a mindset that – forgive the cliché – is very much “glass half full”. It is very much “I can do this. I will do this. I will find a way over, around, under whatever I meet on the path”.

As you all know, I recently launched my proprietary Tier I Stress Interpreter Reset™ online course. I loved developing it along with the Paco Straws Emotional Stability Personal Check In™ that precedes the course. I loved finding ways through the various challenges, as well as the new skills I had to acquire. The course was launched. It’s a goodie. It’s simple and effective and belies all the back-end processes.

A couple of months later (yesterday), I launched the Greek edition of the course as well as the Greek edition of the home page. Developing this edition was extremely fulfilling, and it was really hard work. I had to find ways to create a proper edition, not a translated version, but for Tier I, I stopped short of doing all the recordings for the course in Greek. I went with Plan B and found a way to add Greek subtitles to the English recordings. And the websites, landing pages, documents, emails all needed to be in Greek.

It was a painstaking job, and it actually did not take as long as I initially thought it might. Why? Because I had a very strong “why”. I had a very consistent “can-do” attitude. And I persevered through difficult circumstances and hugely frustrating man-made challenges.

The outcome – a Greek ecosystem alongside the English one, complete with the addition of YouTube videos with Greek subtitles.

In general, we can do anything, just not everything at once. So pick a project, ensure you have a strong ‘why’ and an indomitable ‘can-do’ attitude, and persevere.

The rewards are priceless.

Thanks for reading.
